I spent three fabulous (but exhausting days) attending a hippotherapy course at Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association. No, this is not therapy with hippos! "Hippo" is the latin name for horse. Hippotherapy uses the movement of the horse and the conformation of the horse, as a way of supporting a client's therapy goals. What an amazing group of therapists, and an incredible herd of the most lovely therapy horses! (Sadie the Clydesdale, was my favourite).

Follow a child's lead, and their drive for Motivation. This is the start of their Therapeutic Journey. Today it was sawing branches in the forest to keep the trails clear. Hard work, clear purpose and internal drive! That is meeting a child based on what drives a child and offering therapeutic connection. When we allow ourself to just flow with a child's interests..... Connection is the Foundation.

New client today! I folllowed his sensory needs, and there was so much seeking of vestibular and proprioceptive input! After all that input and co-regulation, we were able to build connection and move forward.....(with the help of a Huge Bear stuffy to help him feel confident and simply "Fly!")

So being a farm-based therapist, I have recently discovered I have ferrel cats roam my property looking for food and water. Most recently, a client saw a group of kittens in the forest as they drove up my driveway. This broke my heart, as for those who know me, I am all about supporting animals! So I reached out to Foster Kritters and they have been absolutely amazing! Kirsten has showed up any day and anytime...even at night, to trap, treat, and support the health of these cats. She sits in her vehicle for hours, sets cameras, and shows up when a trap is triggered. I cannot say enough about this Charity and all the work they do to support these cats and kittens. Please consider giving supplies, furniture...stuff to support their upcoming Yardsale fundraiser September 5th. I will also happily collect your donations and deliver them to the Foster Cat Rescue Society as part of their fundraiser. Here is a photo of the kittens Foster Kritters has rescued on my property (still waiting to help their mamma) Come on Everyone, let's help these animals and this amazing Charity!

Does your child seem to go from calm to overwhelmed with no warning?

For some children, the warning signs are there—but they can’t feel them.

Interoception is our brain’s ability to notice what’s happening inside our body. It’s how we recognise hunger, thirst, tiredness, a racing heart, butterflies, or rising tension before those feelings become overwhelming. When interoception is difficult, children may miss those early body signals and only realise they’re struggling when they’re already in full fight, flight, freeze, flop or fawn.

That’s why emotional regulation strategies can seem to “not work.” We often expect children to use calming tools before they become overwhelmed—but if they can’t detect the early signs, they don’t know it’s time to use them yet.

This visual explains why this happens and shares practical ways to help children build that connection between their body and their emotions.

It was a forest session today, where we engaged in mindfulness exercises (which were as simple yet effective as closing one's eyes for 1 minute and noticing all the nature sounds you might not otherwise hear), enjoying fresh berries at our forest picnic spot, doing some Geocaching, and using the incredible human gift of imagination to create a fairy and animal habitat for others to enjoy on their next forest escape. As stated in the book "Nature-Based Allied Health Practice, " an ample and ever-increasing body of evidence finds that being in nature improves physical, social-0emotional, and mental health. It is also shown to improve cognitive function, regulate the sensory systems, and strengthen family ties." (Wagenfiel and Marder, 2024) We were lucky to have a mum come along to enjoy the forest experience with her daughter today. So let's get our kids (and ourselves) outside and soak in all the benefits that nature offers.

What an adventure I had to East Coast of Australia and New Zealand. I learned so much, but above all the importance of family and investing in connection with my own children. I give so much of my life to working with kids, so this was a wonderful opportunity to connect with my own on an incredible adventure. We saw the amazing waterfalls, islands and inlets of New Zealand, walked vibrant botanical gardens, had wild rainbow parrots land on our balcony, and cockatoos perch on the trees above our hikes. I pet "Morris "the koala as he lives his carefree life in the Brisbane Koala Sanctuary, and saw ducks and sea birds that have a beauty that is truly different from our own. We enjoyed amazing views of the Australian Coast, while giant lizards enjoyed the same view as they basked in the sun. What an adventure and it empowers me further that nature is truly an incredible healing power. I returned to Vancouver Island only yesterday and the moment I set foot on this Island, I had a newfound perspective on all the beauty that is home.

In order to build a Super Cool fort like this, a child needs to engage their "Thinking/Upstairs Brain" which is responsible for so many things (first photo). There is also a very important "Survival /Downstairs brain," that keeps us safe in a time of stress and engages us in a quick action response with either fight, flight, or freeze (or all three). But we don't need that downstairs brain in a place of safety and trust and we definitely don't need it to build a Super Cool fort! Let's Celebrate kids getting out of their Survival Brain and feeling less stress and anxiety in their lives, in order to accomplish amazing things and feel calmness, confidence and connection.
