“Wait… you’re taking what and why?” 😅

A pharmacist and I recently agreed that one of the hardest parts of our jobs is seeing people self-prescribe supplements.

And I get it. You're trying to feel better. We’re constantly being told online to take magnesium, berberine, ashwagandha, probiotics, greens powders, cortisol supplements, hormone supplements... the list never ends.

But here’s the thing: more supplements ≠ better health.

Self-prescribing can sometimes mean:
💸 spending money on things that aren't actually targeting the problem
⏳ delaying results while trying random things
📉 underdosing (not enough to work) or overdosing (too much)
⚠️ interactions with medications, other supplements, or health conditions

And friendly reminder: “natural” doesn’t automatically mean safe, effective, or personalized.

Also... information ≠ healthcare. AI, TikTok, and Google can give ideas and questions, but they can’t replace understanding your health history, symptoms, labs, medications, goals, and context.

Please keep bringing me your supplement questions though 👏 I LOVE when patients come in curious and informed.

My job isn't to judge your supplement shelf. My job is to help you sort through the chaos and figure out what actually has evidence, what dose makes sense, how long to take it, and whether you need it at all.

Let's filter out the noise 🤍

PCOS is being renamed and honestly, it’s long overdue.

The term “Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome” has never fully reflected what many women actually experience.

Many people with PCOS:
• don’t have ovarian cysts
• struggle with metabolic symptoms
• experience insulin resistance, inflammation, acne, irregular cycles, fatigue, infertility, mood changes, and more

Which is why experts are increasingly moving toward the term:

✨ Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)

This shift matters because language shapes:
→ diagnosis
→ research
→ treatment
→ stigma
→ how seriously women’s symptoms are taken

This isn’t just about a name change.

It’s about recognizing that this is a whole-body condition, not simply an “ovary problem.”

Women deserve:
✔ more accurate education
✔ more personalized care
✔ earlier diagnosis
✔ better research
✔ treatment that addresses root causes

And most importantly: Women deserve to be listened to.

What are your thoughts on the proposed change from PCOS to PMOS? 👇

I’m passionate about staying up-to-date on the latest research—because what I learn in the literature directly informs how I care for my patients. For this Research Update at , I personally reviewed hundreds of studies, critically appraised the evidence, and distilled it into the most relevant, research-to-practice clinical applications.

Research evolves fast, and some of what we once thought was “best practice” has changed in just a few short years.

When I scheduled this session, I didn’t realize it would fall on Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day—a poignant reminder of why this work matters. 🩷

✨ Huge gratitude to for guest lecturing at McMaster Health Sciences on health and gender equity in nutrition and food access.

Nutrition isn’t just about what we eat—it’s also about the social and structural factors that shape our choices and opportunities.

💡 Nearly 1 in 5 Canadian families experience food insecurity. These rates are even higher in:
👉 Female single-parent households
👉 Families where women are the main income earners
👉 Racialized communities

Women often face added barriers to nutrition due to the wage gap, caregiving roles, cultural expectations, time/workload demands, and limited access to resources.

💬 This is why equity matters in every conversation about food and health.

✨ Did you know?
Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication where blood pressure rises and organ damage can occur. While doctors screen for certain risk factors early in pregnancy, here’s the surprising part: most cases happen in people with no identifiable risk factors at all.

👀 But what if one of those “hidden” factors is something as simple as… vitamin D?

🧪 New research is strengthening the link between low vitamin D levels and higher risk of preeclampsia and even preterm birth. Earlier studies were mixed, but the evidence is becoming harder to ignore.

⚖️ Vitamin D testing isn’t currently part of standard prenatal care guidelines — but based on the trajectory of the research, there’s a good chance it could be within the next decade.

💡 The good news? Vitamin D is easy to measure with a blood test and safe to supplement when guided by your healthcare provider. Ensuring your levels are optimal may be one of the simplest steps you can take to support a healthy pregnancy.
