Confidence is the ability to see yourself as a flawed individual and still hold yourself in high regard.

A positive relationship with individual and/or partnered s*xuality adds between 15%-20% to overall life satisfaction. In a busy and stressful world, we need that extra 15%-20%. S*xual health is a fundamental component to overall health.

An important part to couples therapy is realizing the person you share a life, a home, and bed with, has views, dreams, feelings, wishes, and thoughts that may or may not validate your own.
Sometimes the difference can feel like a threat, but if approached with compassion, understanding, and curriousity, you can create a relationship with continual newness and discovery.
Intimacy is created by knowing who your partner really is, and sometimes wrestling with the difference.

I have not been very active on this platform over the last year, but I just wanted to let you all know that, as of October 1st, I transitioned from my Alberta Health Services position of 8 years, into full time private practice. I am excited to focus directly on my passion for couples, and s*x therapy.
Thanks to all of you who have supported me in this exciting change.

As some one who works with human s*xuality, I find exploring and understanding s*xual fantasies to be an immensely personal, and a deeply emotional experience. I am continually blown away how behind ,even the most unique s*xual fantasies, there is a common, core emotional need that everyone one of us can relate to. I am fascinated by the fact that fantasy can help us resolve the unresolved, and obtain the unobtained. Therapy can be a helpful place to begin to understand your s*xual desires and fantasies.

Thank goodness that empathetic/compassionate listening is a skill that can be developed, because for many of us, this does not come naturally. When our partners say “I feel sad, hurt, disconnected, scared, disappointed “ and so on, our own perceptions and insecurities flood us with discomfort. If our partner isn’t happy than what does this say about us? Don’t they know how hard I work? Can’t see how I am feeling? They obviously don’t appreciate or care about me, how could I miss that they are so self absorbed.
Our partner on the other side was likely hoping to invite an intimate moment by telling you about them, but you missed it because you cannot hear someone else’s experience when all you are thinking about is you.
Stop. Take a deep breath, and if you value your relationship more than the ego stroking of being right, then really.....really listen. Listen to understand them. This is not about you.
I recently listened to a podcast with Thick Nhat Han. He provided an excellent script for these moments. Try it. Next time your partner says I am upset with you, look at them and say

“My darling,
I know that you are suffering.
I have not understood enough of your difficulties and suffering.
It is not my intention to make you suffer more but the opposite.
Please tell me about your suffering and difficulties.
I am eager to under stand”.

Listen.

Infidelity. Affairs. Cheating. Straying. Unfaithful.
Whatever you want to call it or however you define it, infidelity may be one of the most difficult challenges a couple may have navigate. The data on infidelity prevalence ranges from about 30-65% of married relationships, with women now taking the lead in the gender who strays the most. Like it or not, infidelity has existed as long as committed relationships have, and will continue to be part of our modern day relationship picture.
Healing from infidelity requires a delicate balance of responsibility and vulnerability. Validating our own experience and allowing the experience of another to be equally valid. What was it for you and how did it effect me.
To paraphrase Ester Parel: many of us will have 2,3,or 4 marriages in our lifetime. We just have to decide if they will be with the same person. I wouldn’t wish the pain of an affair on anyone, but the growth that comes from these experiences can be unmatched.
If you want to heal from an affair, a s*x therapist can help answers these 2 questions. What did it mean to you? How did it impact me?
