This is usually one of the first questions I get asked when working with new patients- “what is an adjustment?”

As a chiropractor I use adjustments (manipulative therapy) on a daily basis to help my patients. So what is an adjustment? First things first, you have to analyze to find areas of the body that are restricted (not moving properly/optimally). This can be in the spine or even in other joints such as the hip, knee, wrist etc. Next that joint is taken to it’s end range of motion, and a very fast but low force movement is applied to it.

With adjusting often you will hear a “popping” noise (some people refer to this as “cracking”, but rest assured nothing is actually cracking!). The reason this noise is heard is because when you adjust a joint, you change the space and pressure and air bubble can sometimes form in the synovial fluid (a lubricating substance located inside of your joint). This noise is know as a joint cavitation. It’s important to remember that this noise doesn’t always happen and even without a cavitation, an adjustment is still successful and will be of benefit.

There are many benefits to being adjusted some of which include:
-reduction in muscular tension
-decrease of pain
-better range of motion
-and many more
What’s your favourite place to have adjusted? Let me know below!
