Culturally Safe Practice: What Non-Indigenous Therapists Must Consider Before Beginning Therapy 🌲

For non-Indigenous therapists, providing clinical support to Indigenous clients requires moving beyond standard therapeutic modalities. It demands a deep commitment to cultural humility, self-reflection, and an understanding of how systemic and historical trauma influences the therapeutic relationship.

Before beginning therapy with Indigenous clients, non-Indigenous practitioners should critically consider the following foundational areas:

1. Acknowledge the Power Dynamic and History of Harm
The Clinical Space as a System: Historically, institutional systems—including healthcare and mental health services—have been sources of systemic harm, forced assimilation, and cultural erasure for Indigenous peoples.
Earning Trust: Understand that clinical credentials do not automatically grant safety or trust. Trust must be earned through humility, transparency, and a willingness to de-center traditional Western clinical authority.

In Partnership with The Red Road Healing Society, this 4-session group draws on the strengths of historic First Nations child-rearing practices and traditional values, while connecting them with contemporary parenting skills. Through stories, teachings about nature, cradleboards, positive discipline, maintaining harmony in relationships, and modelling praise, participants will explore ways to build strong, positive family relationships.
