Is online therapy really effective?

Yes, research shows that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many people.

Online therapy gives you the same professional support—but with more comfort and flexibility. You can meet from home, at a time that works for you, without travel or waiting rooms. Many people feel more relaxed and open when talking from a familiar space.

What matters most is not the format, but the human connection between you and your therapist. A strong, trusting relationship can lead to real healing—whether it happens in a room or on a screen.

I have expert training in offering high-quality online therapy, and my clients often comment on the fact that they feel very connected to me and can feel my warmth, although we are in different locations.

I am Audrey Kodye, B.A., M.Ed., a Sunni Muslim Psychologist in Edmonton with 13 years in the field, spent fine-tuning my extensive training, and with lived experience of facing my own mental health difficulties and accessing therapy. I am fully registered and in good standing with the College of Alberta Psychologists.

I have worked in various capacities both after completing my undergraduate and graduate degrees, from serving as a therapist for several private and public organizations, to managing the counselling department of a post-secondary institution.

In 2020, I founded Overcome Anxiety Psychological, my fully virtual Edmonton-based private practice, to offer other Muslim women the validating, faith-informed and effective therapy experience that I so needed when I sought psychological servives for myself. Overcome Anxiety Psychological now serves Muslim women in four provinces and one territory.

Because of everything you are going through, you may feel ‘not normal’ or even ‘crazy’ at times.

In my work with Muslim women, I use self-disclosure about my past struggles as needed. While no two stories are ever exactly the same, my goal in sharing elements of my journey is to demonstrate deep empathy with even these parts of your experience that feel alienating or are hard to put into words. I’m careful to share only what helps, so our time is focused on you.

Anxiety is driven by inaccurate thoughts rather than real danger. One of the most common thinking patterns in anxiety is called "fortune-telling": believing that something bad will definitely happen in the future or that it is highly likely to happen. These thoughts can feel incredibly convincing and often lead us to avoid situations, seek constant reassurance, or ruminate endlessly in an attempt to gain certainty. Yet instead of solving the problem, these behaviours usually perpetuate anxious feelings.

One way we can respond to anxiety is by challenging these "fortune-telling" thoughts and replacing them with more realistic thoughts rooted in tawakkul and trust in Allah ﷻ.

Sometimes, however, changing our thoughts requires another step first; a lot of us may believe that because of our past sins, our future must be bleak, that Allah ﷻ is displeased with us and will not help us. In these moments, sincere tawbah can transform the way we think.

The Prophet ﷺ also regularly sought Allah's forgiveness, despite having his past and future sins forgiven:
"In one sitting, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say one hundred times before getting up: 'My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance. Indeed, You are the Oft-Returning, the Most Forgiving.'"
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3434 – Sahih)

The following hadith contains a du‘a that, by Allah’s permission, replaces anxiety and grief with joy:

Imam Aḥmad, Musnad (1/391), and others reported upon the authority of Ibn Masʿūd that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said: “No slave is afflicted with anxiety and grief, and then says:

‘O Allāh, I am Your slave, son of Your male slave, son of Your female slave. My forehead is in Your hand. Your judgment upon me is assured and whatever you have decreed for me is just. I ask You by every name belonging to You which You have named Yourself with, revealed in Your Book, taught one of Your creation or which You have preserved in the knowledge of the Unseen with You that You make the Qurʾān the spring of my heart and the light of my chest, a banisher for my grief and a reliever for my anxiety.’
“Except that Allāh will replace his distress and grief with joy.”
He was asked, ‘O Messenger of Allāh, should we not learn it?’ He said, “Of course, whoever hears it should learn it.”

Sheikh Uthaymin a déclaré : « Le jeûne d’Achoura comporte quatre niveaux.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “For fasting the day of `Ashura, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before.” (Reported by Muslim, 1976).

Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of `Ashura, and this month, meaning Ramadaan.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 1867).

Sheikh Uthaymin has stated that: “The fast of Ashura has four levels. The first level is to fast the 9th, the 10th and the 11th [days of Muharram]. And this is the highest level. And [in addition], if a person was to fast these three days, then he has attained the virtue of fasting the [recommended] three days of every month. The second level, [is to fast] the 9th and the 10th [days of muharram]. And the third [level], [is to fast] the 10th and the 11th [days of Muharram]. And the fourth [level], [is to fast] the 10th [day of Muharram] by itself."
