☀️ Sober Summer, anyone? Here are the highlights from our recent blog!

For many of us, summer and alcohol naturally go together — patios, camping trips, festivals, lake days, BBQs. But more people are becoming curious about what happens when they cut back on drinking, even temporarily.

A “Sober Summer” doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing. Even reducing alcohol can lead to benefits like:

✨ Better sleep
✨ More energy
✨ Improved mood
✨ Less anxiety
✨ More meaningful social connections
✨ Saving money
✨ Waking up feeling refreshed instead of hungover

One helpful mindset shift?
Say yes to activities that don’t revolve around drinking.

Think:
🌿 River valley walks
☕ Coffee dates
🚲 Bike rides
🎨 Creative hobbies
🏐 Recreational sports
🎶 Outdoor events & markets

Many people discover they feel more present, confident, and connected when alcohol is no longer the centre of every social event.

If social anxiety, stress, burnout, or emotional coping make changing drinking habits feel difficult, support is available. 💛

At the Aspen Wellness Centre in Edmonton, our therapists provide compassionate, trauma-informed mental health support for adults navigating grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, substance use concerns and more. Contact us today to learn more. (link in bio.)

🔍 Do you know how to spot the signs of a Narcissist?

Remember, lots of people may act in ways that are self centred at times, which is normal. Putting yourself first, being assertive and having good boundaries is not the same as being a narcissist.

Narcissistic traits tend to be consistent over time, and across relationships. Many people may have some narcissistic tendencies, without meeting the criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Being in a relationship with a narcissistic person often leaves you feeling:
-Emotionally drained,
-Overwhelmed
-Confused
-Questioning yourself
-Questioning reality

Over time, it can decrease your self esteem and sense of self. Sometimes these relationships can become emotionally abusive. Keep in mind that this can affect relationships that are romantic, platonic, personal and professional.

If you or someone you love is experiencing relationship challenges with someone who has narcissistic traits, speaking to a trained professional can help you make sense of your experience and create a pathway forward.

⚖ Balance

We are always striving to find balance. Maintaining a balanced mood and emotional state is difficult because it requires self awareness and action. We have to work hard at emotional regulation to adapt to our ever changing environment. Keeping your cool when under pressure at work, or patience when your child is acting out is really tough. It requires proactive self care and stress management so that when challenges do arise, we have the capacity to handle them effectively. Stress is cumulative, and when it builds up over time, it reduces our capacity to balance our emotions.

We are here to help! Let us help you identify the sources of stress in your life and discover strategies, resources and supports to help you feel more physically and emotionally balanced.

🚧 Healthy boundaries aren't about pushing people away—they're about protecting your peace, energy, and well-being.

If you've ever felt:
✔️ Drained after certain conversations
✔️ Guilty for saying "no"
✔️ Responsible for everyone else's feelings
✔️ Frustrated because your needs aren't being respected

It may be time to take a closer look at your boundaries.

Healthy boundaries help us create stronger relationships, reduce resentment, and improve communication with the people we care about.

A few examples of healthy boundaries:
💬 "I don't have the capacity to discuss this right now."
⏰ "I'm unavailable this evening."
🤝 "I don't like being spoken to that way."
🧠 "I need some time to myself to recharge."

Setting boundaries can feel uncomfortable at first, especially if you're used to putting other people's needs before your own. The good news? Boundary setting is a skill that can be learned and strengthened over time.

At Aspen Wellness Centre, our therapists help individuals and couples develop healthier communication patterns, improve relationships, and build confidence in setting boundaries that support their mental wellness.

Have you ever heard of 'Parentification'? This is a term referring to a child who experienced on-going role reversal during their upbringing; where they were put in the position of being emotionally responsible for their parent/caregiver, or expected to have parental responsibilities for other children because the actual parent/caregiver was absent, abusive or otherwise unavailable.

Children who grow up this way are often told they are 'mature for their age', 'old souls' or 'wise beyond their years'. Unfortunately, if their mature behaviour is the result of being parentified, they often experience struggles in adulthood because they were so focused on interpreting the subtle changes in the mood, body language, tone or emotional cues of others that they didn't have the chance to reflect inward about their own emotional experience.

If you can relate, you aren't alone. Many adults seek therapy to help unpack their childhood experiences, and to have the opportunity to focus on their inner emotional experience, and let go of patterns of behaviour that are no longer serving them.

Gardening & Grounding - A Perfect Match

Do you ever kick off your shoes and walk barefoot in the summer? Have you noticed that you feel more calm, relaxed and stable? Research suggests that the practice of 'grounding' and having our skin and body in direct contact with the earth can help to stabilize the body's physiology at the deepest levels, reduce inflammation, pain, and stress, improve blood flow, energy, and sleep, and provide a greater feeling of well-being. It's amazing how something so simple can have such a great impact.

If you are an avid gardener and enjoy getting your hands dirty, you may also notice the effects from this practice- with the added bonus of seeing your plants grow!

The next time you have the chance to sit outside, try taking your shoes off and letting your feet touch the ground and see for yourself.
