🤧 Cold, flu, and respiratory illness season is here!
As the days get cooler and fall settles in, it's common to see more cases of respiratory infections, influenza, gastrointestinal illness, and COVID-19. While we can't avoid every exposure, practicing good infection prevention habits can go a long way in helping to keep our workplaces, homes, and communities healthy.
You can help prevent and control infections by:
• Get immunized.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Clean your hands.
• Clean the ‘high-touch’ surfaces.
• Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing.
We encourage you to take a moment to review the poster and consider saving it as a handy reminder of the everyday actions we can take to stay healthy throughout the season.🍎

🚨 Hazard Assessment & Safety Reporting Matter! 🚨
Every day, workers may notice hazards such as slippery walkways, damaged equipment, poor lighting, or unsafe conditions. Taking a few moments to identify and report these hazards can help prevent injuries and keep everyone safe.
A hazard can't be fixed if no one knows about it. Reporting hazards, near misses, and safety concerns allows organizations to take corrective action and make positive safety improvements before someone gets hurt.
✅ Identify hazards before starting work
✅ Report unsafe conditions right away
✅ Complete required hazard assessments
✅ Help create a safer workplace for everyone
Remember: Safety reporting is not about blame. It's about prevention. If we don't report safety issues, unsafe situations may continue and could lead to future incidents or injuries.

According to the OHS legislation, every worker in Alberta has 3 fundamental rights:
1. 🙋 The Right to Know
You have the right to be informed about any hazards in your workplace — including visitor and contractor management, seasonal hazards, chemicals, client conditions, etc. Employers must provide hazard assessments, trainings, orientations, safety data sheets, etc. so you're never left unknown.
2. 🗣️ The Right to Participate
Workers have the right to be involved in health and safety at their workplace — participate in inspections, training, ability to raise concerns, and helping to identify and control hazards.
3. 🛑 The Right to Refuse Unsafe Work
If you believe a task puts your health or safety at serious risk, you have the legal right to refuse it. Your employer must investigate and resolve the concern before work resumes.
Know your rights, use your voice, and refuse unsafe work – your safety matters.

Staying Safe in the Summer Heat
☀️ Staying Safe in the Summer Heat ☀️

Staying safe in the heat must always come first.
Here are a few essential Heat Safety Tips to keep in mind:
• 💧 Drink water often – stay hydrated before you feel thirsty!
• 🌳 Take breaks in the shade – cool down frequently.
• 👒 Dress for the weather – wear sunscreen, hats, and light clothing.
• 👀 Watch for signs of heat stress – keep an eye out for dizziness, headaches, or nausea.
• 🚨 Act fast – never ignore early symptoms.
Let’s enjoy the beautiful sunshine safely and take great care of each other this summer!

Do you know HOW to REPORT a workplace injury for first aid?
Every work site and program has its mandatory first aid kit (s), including workers’ vehicle, where you can find the proper first aid supplies and seek immediate medical support.
After you used the first aid supplies, report it right away ---- it matters more than you think. Even minor injuries should be documented as soon as possible — delays can complicate treatment, coverage, and your rights as a worker.
Here's a quick reminder of the basics:
✅Report the injury to the supervisor or the ECAT supervisor (if after hours) immediately regardless of the severity.
✅ Make sure a First Aid Record form and an incident report are completed.
✅ Keep monitoring your symptoms.
**Copies of First Aid Record forms are available in every first aid kit. **
Don't wait until it "gets worse" to say something. Early reporting protects you.
Have questions about workplace first aid reporting? Reach out to your supervisor/manager or the Health and Safety. 💬

Did You Know? Your Health and Safety Committee Is Here for You!
Our Health and Safety Committee (HSC) plays an important role in keeping our workplace safe, healthy, and supportive for everyone. Here’s a quick look at what HSC members do:
🔹 Listen to Safety Concerns: HSC members receive and discuss safety issues brought forward by staff and help find solutions.
🔹 Take Part in Hazard Assessments: They help identify risks in the workplace and work with management to reduce or eliminate them.
🔹 Review Safety Documents: The committee looks over inspection reports and other safety records including R14 Emergency Drill Report, and R15 Fire Evacuation Drill Reports to make sure nothing is missed.
🔹 Complete Investigations: If there is a severe injury, illness, incident, or near miss, HSC members help investigate what happened and how to prevent it in the future.
🔹 Share Recommendations: They provide feedback and suggestions to improve safety practices across the organization.
🔹Conduct Inspections: HSC members also take part in regular workplace inspections. These inspections help spot hazards early—before they cause harm. It’s one of the most important ways we keep everyone safe.
If you ever have a safety concern or want to learn more about the committee, feel free to reach out to a HSC member. Your voice helps make our workplace safer for all.
Stay safe, everyone!
