One of the less discussed challenges of parenting is learning how our role evolves as children become teenagers. As young people develop independence, parents are faced with a difficult balance: providing guidance and support while creating space for growth, decision-making, and resilience. Research...

Our personal growth work, day in, day out, is to get good at meeting and welcoming our emotions and thoughts, to do so with curiosity, seek understanding of our internal experience, and to be curious and seek understanding about the internal experience of others. This is repair. This is reciprocity. This builds capacity and tolerance and move through what's difficult with grace, acceptance and ease. This can lead to equity. This builds capacity for humility. Humility and assertiveness (saying how we feel, asking for what we need, offer what can be done differently next time) help build safety. Doing this consistently over time, builds Trust. Trust facilitates connection. Connection helps develop and strengthen positive emotions - gratitude, joy, appreciation, empathy and care.

Admitting we are wrong when it's clear we made an error (not just saying sorry to placate and avoid) is part and parcel of how a decent human being shows up: choosing consideration over convenience.

Thank you James :) This perspective is one more pathway to understand and live the ancient teachings underlying mindfulness.

One of the great mistakes in life is suffering for years because you didn't want to feel foolish for five minutes. You don't want to apologize, so you let a relationship deteriorate. You're scared of the sting of rejection, so you don't ask for what you want. You fear people will say your idea is du...

Adults may need help themselves with emotion coaching, to build and improve on the skills of connection an empathy, as mentioned below.
Reading, learning, trying things out, and talking with a therapist can compliment practice and tools to examine, support and reinforce healthy relationships, with oneself and with others.

"Social feeds have a lot to say about “being a man,” [targeting teen boys] and this is a place where parents, caregivers, and educators can help keep the dialogue grounded. Adolescence is a time when the reward system develops faster than planning skills, so high-arousal content can feel persuasive."
Teens need consistent connection with caring adults who become a powerful buffer. It's not helpful or reasonable to have them "figure it out on their own." In fact it's risky to do so. "Your moves matter" as an adult in their life and have a huge influence on their development, what they do, and who they will become.
This guide from the Gottman Institute includes main points of Emotion Coaching, where adults model empathy and repair, and establish simple rituals that make regular conversations easier, along with sensible gaming boundaries you can set together.

For couples, intimate relationships, and almost any type of relationship in general: What I appreciate about the Gottman Method is how it offers useful ways to dialogue targeting the underlying factors that are really at play during an interaction--the things that are hard to say or are subconscious--and having tools to speak respectfully, feel heard, feel understood and to maintain connection. Check out the free tools available through their blog and Love Notes newsletter:
