🚨 Is your shoulder pain actually a neck problem in disguise? 🛑
If you are constantly massaging your outer shoulder or stretching your arm to get rid of a deep, burning ache, you might be chasing the wrong target! As this anatomical breakdown shows, the area screaming in pain is often just a symptom of a hidden issue higher up.
When the C5-C6 cervical nerve roots in your neck become irritated or compressed, the pain signals don’t just stay in your neck. Instead, they travel down through a complex electrical highway known as the brachial plexus, radiating straight into your posterior deltoid muscle (shoulder) and following the path of the radial nerve right down your arm.
Common warning signs of C5-C6 nerve compression:
• A dull, deep ache at the top or back of the shoulder
• Sharp, shooting pain traveling down the outside of the arm
• Weakness when lifting your arm or bending your elbow
• Numbness or a “pins and needles” sensation extending toward your thumb
Instead of aggressively stretching the aching muscles—which can sometimes irritate the nerve even further—the key is to focus on correcting your spinal biomechanics and identifying the root cause at the neck level.
