Life is full. And in the busyness, it can be hard to know if your child is doing well. Kids rarely say "I'm happy." Happiness shows up quietly, in the small moments you might not even notice you're watching for.
A registered psychologist would tell you to look for these 5 signs:
1. They negotiate and push back with you. A little "but why" or "just five more minutes" isn't defiance, it's trust. Kids only test limits with people they feel safe with.
2. They want you as their audience. The cartwheel you've seen ten times, the silly story, the drawing that's "still not done." They want your eyes on them because your attention feels like love.
3. They let their full personality out around you. Silliness, loudness, and goofiness are signs of safety. A child who feels secure doesn't hold back who they are.
4. They come to you after a hard moment, not just a good one. A skinned knee, a friend who was mean, a bad dream. Coming to you first is a sign of felt safety.
5. They open up when there's no pressure to. In the car, mid-bath time, folding laundry together, somewhere in the shuffle of an ordinary moment. Kids share the most when it doesn't feel like a conversation.
