Life can change in an instant.

In June 2024, Stony Plain resident Shayne DeMarce was involved in a motorcycle accident. At first, it didn’t seem severe, but things quickly changed when Shayne’s doctors uncovered that he’d suffered a stroke.

As he worked through rehabilitation with the support of his family and care teams, Shayne gradually regained movement and independence, and found an unexpected passion in filmmaking along the way.

What began as a creative outlet for storytelling grew into a podcast and journey turned documentary, cleverly titled, Upstroke.

This Stroke Awareness Month, Shayne is debuting his documentary — a heartfelt and inspiring look at his journey, from the early moments in acute care to his ongoing recovery at the Glenrose.

As part of their ongoing commitment to creating more accessible community spaces, we’re thrilled to be one of this year’s recipients of the RBC Foundation Community Spaces Grant, receiving a generous $300,000 toward the redevelopment of the Glenrose therapeutic pool and the facilities’ accessible changing spaces.

“The Glenrose is recognized around the world for excellence in rehabilitation care. Support from RBC Foundation helps us continue advancing that legacy by rebuilding a state-of-the-art therapeutic pool that will serve thousands of patients each year and provide access to specialized therapies that accelerate recovery and improve quality of life,” says Mark Korthuis, President and CEO at the Glenrose Hospital Foundation.

Thank you, RBC Foundation, for your commitment to creating more accessible communities.

Most people think a diagnosis tells you the future.

It doesn't. It tells you where the journey begins.

The future is shaped by what happens next:

The therapies.
The technologies.
The breakthroughs.
The research.
The people who refuse to accept limitations as the final answer.

That's why we launched Make If Possible — a $25 million campaign to advance the future of rehabilitation healthcare.

Because possibility isn't something you find. It's something you build.

What if recovery had no limits?

Today, we’re proud to launch Make If Possible — the Glenrose Hospital Foundation’s largest fundraising campaign of the last decade.

Together, we’re raising $25 million to advance rehabilitation in Alberta by investing in:

· Infrastructure — building spaces that make rehabilitation possible.
· Research & Innovation — advancing discoveries that create new possibilities in care.
· Patient Care — supporting life-improving programs, technologies, and treatments.

Anchored in our efforts to rebuild the Glenrose therapeutic pool, this campaign invites our community to imagine what’s possible when we come together to support rehabilitation care — and help Make If Possible.

This Legacy Giving Month, we’re sharing how legacy gifts can help support future rehabilitation care at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.

A legacy gift is a meaningful way to support patients and families through your will or estate planning. These future gifts help fund programs, innovation, and specialized services.

Through your generosity, every legacy gift, no matter the size, has the power to help shape the future of care for generations to come.

For many patients at the Glenrose, recovery isn't just regaining strength, it can also mean relearning how to speak, swallow, hear, and communicate.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and audiologists support patients and families through all of these stages — from stroke and brain injury recovery to feeding, voice therapy, hearing assessments, and technology-assisted communication.

With the support of our generous donors and community partners, the Glenrose Hospital Foundation is proud to help fund specialized technologies like the Visi-Pitch, Nasometer, and portable audiometers.

This National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, we celebrate and thank the incredible SLPs and audiologists whose care and expertise help patients connect with the world around them.

At the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, accessibility is at the heart of everything we do. From equipment and therapies to programs and spaces, it’s about creating opportunities for patients to regain independence, reconnect with the things they love, and move forward with confidence.

During National AccessAbility Week, we recognize the importance of building more inclusive communities, and the role rehabilitation plays in making that possible.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and community, the Glenrose Hospital Foundation is proud to support programs, equipment, research, and spaces that help make rehabilitation care more accessible for patients across Alberta.

Last month, staff from the Glenrose, Bennu, and Kids Included came together to build five emPower cars. đźš—

emPower Cars are custom, power ride-on vehicles designed for children ages 2 to 6, with disabilities. The cars, designed similarly to off-the-shelf “toy” ride-ons, are built from plywood and 3D printed parts.

Their impact, however, extends far beyond play. The emPower Car opens up a whole new world of movement for children, giving them the chance to explore their surroundings independently — something many may not otherwise have the opportunity to do.

This summer, Mark Ivancic will take on a 300 km cycling journey through the Canadian Rockies as part of the Hope, Love, and Resilience Expedition, riding from Banff to Jasper in support of the Glenrose Hospital Foundation and the Candian Mental Health Association (CMHA-Edmonton). 🚴‍♂️

Following a devastating stroke in 2018, Mark’s recovery journey has become a story of perseverance, determination, and hope. Through this ride, he hopes to give back and inspire others facing their own rehabilitation and mental health journeys.

Mark’s goal is to raise $1,000 for every kilometre ridden, helping support programs and care that changed his life and continue to make a difference for others.
