Why is it so hard to slow down?
Rest is often framed as unproductive, or something we hesitate to connect to our sense of ability or worth. But for many BIPOC individuals, there has been a long history of pressure to overwork while navigating systems that were never designed with us in mind.
Over time, our bodies adapted to these conditions. Slowing down can feel unfamiliar, and at times, even unsafe.
From a culturally responsive lens, rest can be a form of resistance; an idea deeply explored in Rest Is Resistance by Tricia Hersey. It invites us to reclaim our need to feel, rather than only function.
Slowing down is not just self-care. It can look like pausing, noticing our bodies, and being gentle with what comes up, without working against our own pace.
These moments can begin to rebuild a sense of safety within ourselves, creating space to exist more fully and authentically, without judgment.
