✈️ Taking Flight at the Alberta Aviation Museum! ✈️

This week, residents from our 3rd Floor enjoyed a community outing to the Alberta Aviation Museum, where they explored Alberta's rich aviation history and got an up-close look at a variety of historic aircraft.

Residents enjoyed touring the museum, learning about the stories behind the planes, and sharing memories of air travel, military service, and aviation from years past. The outing sparked meaningful conversations, reminiscence, and plenty of curiosity as residents explored the exhibits together.

Community outings like these are an important part of Recreation Therapy, providing opportunities for social connection, lifelong learning, cognitive stimulation, and continued engagement with the broader community. These experiences help residents maintain meaningful leisure interests while creating new memories and experiences.

A wonderful day of discovery, conversation, and adventure was enjoyed by all!

📸 A Special Visit from The Doll Club of Edmonton

This week, residents had a wonderful opportunity to take a trip down memory lane thanks to a special visit from the Edmonton Doll Club.

Club members generously donated several beautiful porcelain dolls, baby dolls, and stuffed animals for residents to enjoy. Residents were invited to browse the collection, choose their favorites, and share memories and stories that the dolls inspired.

The room was filled with smiles, conversation, and nostalgia as many residents reminisced about childhood toys, treasured keepsakes, and special moments from years gone by. It was heartwarming to see the joy and connections created through such a simple yet meaningful experience.

From a recreation therapy perspective, dolls can provide meaningful opportunities for reminiscence, sensory engagement, comfort, and emotional expression. For many older adults, particularly those living with dementia, interacting with dolls can evoke positive memories, foster a sense of purpose and nurturing, and encourage social connection and conversation.

A heartfelt thank you to Jana, Ethel, and the Edmonton Doll Club for their generosity and kindness in making this memorable visit possible. Your thoughtful donation brought comfort, happiness, and many cherished memories to our residents.

🌼 Seniors Week at Allen Gray! 🌼

We had a wonderful start to June celebrating Seniors Week with our residents!

Despite the rainy weather, residents enjoyed getting their hands in the dirt as we planted flowers in the courtyard and new raised planters located on resident balconies. These accessible gardening spaces allow more residents to experience the joy and therapeutic benefits of gardening right outside their doors. 🌱🌸

The celebrations continued with a fantastic musical performance by the Band of Brothers, who had everyone tapping their toes, singing along, and enjoying an afternoon of great entertainment. 🎶

Of course, no celebration would be complete without a sweet treat! Everyone enjoyed delicious ice cream as we recognized and celebrated the contributions, stories, and experiences of the seniors who make our community so special. ❤️

🌱 🌱 A big thank you to Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association - ATRA for supporting Allen Gray through their grant program!

Thanks to this funding, we were able to purchase raised planters for our resident balconies, creating accessible gardening opportunities that allow residents to enjoy the benefits of gardening right outside their door. These planters help remove barriers to participation and ensure more residents can take part in meaningful horticulture activities throughout the summer months.

This week, residents enjoyed getting their hands in the soil, planting flowers and herbs, and spending time outdoors. Gardening offers many therapeutic benefits, including sensory stimulation, gentle physical activity, relaxation, reminiscence, social connection, and a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

We are grateful to ATRA for helping us enhance meaningful recreation opportunities and support resident well-being through the joy of gardening! 🌼🌿

June 1–7 marks Seniors’ Week in Alberta, a special time to recognize and celebrate the incredible contributions seniors make to our families, communities, and lives every day.

This year is especially significant as Alberta celebrates the 40th anniversary of Seniors’ Week.

At Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre, we are honored to be part of the lives of so many remarkable seniors. Every day, we witness their strength, resilience, wisdom, humor, and the countless stories and experiences that have helped shape the communities we know today.

To the seniors who have built families, forged lasting friendships, overcome challenges, shared their knowledge, and continue to inspire us through their kindness and spirit—thank you. Your contributions matter, your stories matter, and you are deeply valued.

We were so grateful to welcome the students and music teacher from Michael Strembitsky School for a special performance yesterday morning.

From some Beatles songs and Elvis Presley favorites to a beautiful hand bell choir performance and a sing-along at the end, the room was filled with energy, smiles, and applause.

Thank you to the students and their incredible teacher for sharing your talents and creating such meaningful moments for everyone. We truly enjoyed this experience! 💛

🎶 Sunday afternoon, we were honored to welcome the "Faith In Action Choir" from The Bible Pentecostal Church for a beautiful afternoon of gospel music, spirituality, and fellowship.

Residents and staff thoroughly enjoyed the uplifting songs, heartfelt harmonies, and meaningful messages shared throughout the performance. Music and prayer can bring a deep sense of comfort, joy, connection, and reflection, and this visit truly touched the hearts of many. 💙

A sincere thank you to the choir members for sharing your time, faith, talents, and kindness with our community. The performance brought warmth and inspiration to our home, and we are so grateful for the special afternoon together.
