HOW DO YOU TELL A PREGNANT WOMAN SHE CAN’T BRING HER CHILDREN TO HER PRENATAL APPOINTMENTS OR THE HOSPITAL WHEN SHE HAS NOBODY TO LEAVE THEM WITH?

This is something I’ve personally struggled with, and I know I can’t be the only one.

Some hospitals won’t allow kids during prenatal checkups, in labor rooms, or even to stay overnight after their mother gives birth.

But here’s my question. What exactly is a mother supposed to do when she has no family nearby, no babysitter, and no one she trusts to watch her children?

Miss her prenatal appointments? Leave her kids home alone? Or start looking for a babysitter while she’s having contractions? 😩

I understand hospitals have safety rules, but shouldn’t those rules also consider the realities of motherhood? Now you are torn between new baby and your other kids and yet they expect you to be 💯 okay

WHY CAN’T HOSPITALS PROVIDE A SAFE, SUPERVISED SPACE FOR CHILDREN WHILE THEIR MOTHERS RECEIVE MEDICAL CARE?

Because if we’re truly serious about supporting mothers, shouldn’t that support include the children they already have?

Or am I missing something here? 🤔

Investing in Midwifery Care

Find the Indigenous Midwives, Elders, birthing families and those supporting those birthing and start to have the conversations!

There is an opportunity for funding from the AB government coming up and we hope your community is planning to apply for that funding. The easiest and most natural way of building up and supporting midwifery in the community is to bring people together..... over food.... over tea and reawakening those stories and letting families know that they deserve family centered care that is culturally appropriate and that Midwifery is a pathway forward for healthy families.

Community circles to lift up Indigenous Midwifery and Birthing Families. That's it.

It really is that simple to get things going. The rest will follow, the people who will do the work will come forward, the funding will filter in and the families will be supported to be be healthy enough to have a choice in where they want to birth and how.
