June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to learn from and honour the histories, cultures, stories, and ongoing contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
This quote comes from my retelling of Skywoman, a powerful figure from Haudenosaunee tradition, whose story reminds us of our relationship with the land, with each other, and with the cycles that sustain life. I first came across Skywoman's story in Robin Wall Kimmerer's beautiful book Braiding Sweetgrass.
This month, I encourage you to seek out Indigenous authors, artists, storytellers, Knowledge Keepers, and educators, and to spend some time reflecting on your own relationship with the land you inhabit.
