Working on opinion writing in a fun and active way!

Child picked a strip of paper, read it, and decided if it was an opinion, reason, or conclusion. Then they tossed a bean bag into the matching basket! Writing skills don’t always have to happen at the desk!

From desk disaster ➡️ calm + focused ✨

Here’s the system we teach:

Step 1: Sort it out
Keep at school ✏️ | Take home 🏠 | Garbage 🗑️

Step 2: Home pouch
Anything going home goes straight into a pouch (and pouch comes right back the next day!)

Step 3: School zone
All school items go into a binder (by subject) or a bin on a nearby shelf

What stays in the desk?
→ 1 folder for loose papers
→ Writing tools

End of day reset (15 mins):
Loose papers get filed into the binder ✔️

Less clutter = less overwhelm = more learning

POV: the OT is testing the “wiggles help you focus” theory 😄

Movement = regulation.
And when kids can regulate, they can attend, learn, and feel more in control in the classroom.

When a pencil grasp makes coloring or writing difficult or tiring, small tools like pencil grips can help guide the fingers into a more efficient position.
The best part? This kiddo said coloring felt easier the moment he tried the pencil grip!

I decided to incorporate a little AI into my printing session today! This kiddo was excited to use her imagination to come up with creative ideas including a goblin shark, a princess at a hockey mansion, and a teal palace! We turned her ideas into a super silly image with the help of AI, and suddenly she was excited to write all about it! When kids are invested in the idea, printing feels purposeful and motivating. We are not quite done writing about the image yet but we are off to a great start!

I mean who doesn’t love Hippos right?! 😜

This is an example of using emergent literacy in practice!

This junior high student is autistic, and writing anything has felt really hard. Participating in literacy tasks? Even harder.

But when we asked him what he wanted to write about, everything changed. 🙌

With a simple plan and a topic he loved, he followed through with zero protest.

When we tap into what kids care about, we unlock engagement, confidence, and real learning. 💛

Connection first. Interests matter. That’s where the magic happens.
