Calling all young artists! 🎨 our colouring contest is officially open, and we want to see your kiddo’s masterpiece.

Grab some crayons, pencils, markers or paint, download an official eye health colouring page, and let their imagination run wild. Every child aged 3-12 can enter, with winners chosen from three age categories: tiny tots, young explorers and junior artists.

One entry per child, artwork must be all their own work, and entries are open to kids across Alberta. Submit by August 31, 2026 for a chance to win.

A slit lamp is the microscope with a bright, adjustable light that your Alberta Doctor of Optometry uses to get a magnified, close-up view of the front parts of your eye, think cornea, iris, and lens.

It lets them spot things you’d never notice on your own, like tiny scratches, early cataracts, signs of dry eye, or inflammation. It’s one of the most useful tools in the exam room for catching problems early.

Between the rain and wildfire smoke, it has been a tough season for Albertans' eyes.

Alberta optometrist Dr. Sheila Morrison spoke with Livewire Calgary about the effects of wildfire smoke and allergens on the eyes, and when to seek professional help from your optometrist to prevent any long-term damage from irritation.

Dr. Morrison offered several helpful tips for relief, such as switching to glasses if you wear contact lenses, using preservative-free eye drops and making sure to thoroughly clean your eyes and eyebrows at the end of each day to remove allergens or wildfire smoke particles.
