A year of progress for optometry in Alberta. 👁️

From raising awareness of eye health to advancing the profession’s role in Alberta’s health-care system, the Alberta Association of Optometrists’ 2026 Annual Report highlights the impact of our work alongside members, volunteers and partners.

A few highlights from the past year:

📣 103 million campaign impressions through our public awareness campaign

👥 900+ members represented, accounting for 94% of practicing Doctors of Optometry in Alberta

🏛️ 100+ active Government Relations Committee members supporting our advocacy efforts

🤝 40 presentations delivered to allied health professionals, multicultural groups and seniors’ organizations

🔎 Doctors of Optometry included in Primary Care Alberta’s Find a Provider tool, an important step in increasing the profession’s visibility within the health-care system

These achievements reflect our continued work to advance optometry, strengthen relationships across the health-care system and help Albertans better understand the importance of eye health.

Taking place October 29–31 at the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre, this year’s Conference will bring together 400+ delegates and 100+ industry partners and exhibitors for three days of continuing education, professional networking and industry innovation.

This World Sight Day, we are joining the global call to 💛

More than 2 billion people around the world live with poor vision or a vision impairment, and for over a billion of them, it could have been prevented or treated. Regular eye exams are one of the simplest ways to protect your sight for the long run.

Is your child squinting at the board, or are they just fine? Sometimes, it’s hard to tell.

Myopia (nearsightedness) is becoming more common in children and can progress quickly, often without them noticing. The good news is that when myopia is caught early, there are treatment options that can help slow its progression.

This Children’s Vision Month, make an eye exam part of your school year routine. Alberta Health provides partial coverage toward an annual eye exam for children and youth up to age 18.

An eye exam can tell you a LOT more than whether you need glasses. 👀

Your Doctor of Optometry can assess things like your prescription, the health of your retina and optic nerve, and signs of certain eye conditions that may not cause noticeable symptoms right away.

And yes, even if you can see perfectly, regular eye exams still matter.
