Who knew that sometimes meetings look like this now? ☕

A little coffee thought with a sprinkle of psychology:

Alfred Adler coined the term "Gemeinschaftsgefühl" — roughly translated as "social interest," or a felt sense of connection to our community. He believed it was one of the strongest indicators of mental wellness.

In other words: belonging isn't a bonus. It's foundational.
So this morning, we're raising our mugs to community, connectedness, and coffee — three things that seem to go hand-in-hand.

Thanks for the coffee meeting this morning Christina who we at the Clinic affectionately call “boss”.

P.s. her cup is the bigger one :)

Enjoy your morning cup of whatever connects you to yourself and others.

Brain Pulls an All-Nighter (While You Sleep) 😴

Here's a fun little brain fact to chew on: while you're snoozing, your mind is anything but lazy.

During REM sleep — that dreamy stage where your eyes dart around behind closed lids — your brain is busy filing away the day's memories and sorting through your emotions. Think of it as your brain's overnight cleanup crew, deciding what to keep, what to toss, and how to make sense of it all.

The really cool part? Scientists think this stage is so powerful for processing tough experiences that one popular therapy actually borrows from it. It's called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and it uses back-and-forth eye movements — a bit like what naturally happens in REM — to help people work through trauma. Researchers are still untangling exactly why it works, but the link to REM-style brain activity is a big part of the theory. Pretty wild that something your brain does every night might help us heal during the day. 🧠✨

Treat your sleep like the superpower it is. Your memory, your mood, and your future self will thank you. 💤

Such an exciting time to be an Oiler Fan!
What a Neat clip. We get to watch our own Edmontonian on his journey to success in the NHL and now in the playoffs Game 2. Lovely to hear skinner say “started to working on the mental side of the game, working on things besides hockey actually that really ended up helping me with hockey.” He’s working inwards and it shows.

Providing structure and support is a delicate balance and one that can be achieved through mutual respect. Asking questions is mutually respectful and encourages your child to exercise their problem-solving muscles, invites reflection and builds intrinsic motivation. Some examples of helpful questions are: What would you like to work on first? What would help you now? How would you like me to support you?

Let’s take a closer look at these questions from a child’s perspective: 1. To answer the first question, I need to look broadly at all the work I have and make a plan (time management). Then I need to prioritize (goal setting) a work flow as well as communicate that to my parent. 2. I am stuck, perhaps frustrated, and I need to stay regulated or get regulated. I then consider the resources I have at my disposal (problem solving). Those resources could be: phoning a friend, asking a parent, emailing a teacher and/or reviewing some notes.

Without these questions that are asked in a tone of curiosity and kindness, a child may miss an opportunity to develop these other essential life skills along with learning their academics.

Scientific studies continue to show us how exercise can bring a range of cognitive benefits, from limiting the risk of Alzheimer's to giving an immediate boost to our learning capabilities. Researchers working in this area at the University of South Australia have turned their attention to…
