🧩 A puzzle here, a little colouring there! 🎨 Who knew everyday activities could support so many skills?

Puzzles and colouring are more than just relaxing ways to pass the time. They're also activities occupational therapists may use to help support:

🧠 Focus and concentration: Staying engaged with a task

✋ Fine motor skills: Practicing controlled hand and finger movements

👀 Visual perception: Recognizing shapes, patterns, and details

🤝 Hand-eye coordination: Helping your eyes and hands work together

🎨 Creativity and problem-solving: Exploring different approaches and finding solutions

Occupational therapy focuses on helping people participate in the everyday activities that matter to them, and sometimes, that can involve something as simple as a puzzle or colouring!

Want to give these activities a try at home? Grab a puzzle or your favourite colouring book and spend a few minutes doing something that's both enjoyable and engaging.

💬 Are you team puzzles 🧩 or team colouring 🎨? Let us know in the comments!

Maybe you take the longer route to avoid the highway. You wait until traffic is lighter. Or you let someone else drive because certain trips make you anxious.

Driving anxiety can quietly start shaping where you go and how you get there.

Occupational therapy can help you understand what may be keeping that anxiety going and gradually work toward the driving or passenger situations that matter in your everyday life.

Bloating or constipation this Thanksgiving? 🦃 Gentle abdominal massage may help you feel more comfortable.

Our manual osteopath Katie Stanley demonstrates the ILU massage, also called the “I Love You” massage. Its strokes follow the path of your large intestine and may help gas and stool move along.

This self-massage technique may ease constipation and related bloating or gas discomfort. 👀 Watch the demonstration and save it to revisit later.

Wait a few hours after a large meal. Use gentle pressure and stop if it hurts. ⚠️ Check with a clinician first if you’re pregnant, have had recent abdominal surgery, or have a bowel condition or abdominal hernia. This video is for general education only. Seek medical advice for ongoing symptoms.

When your vestibular and visual systems are not working together as well as they should, everyday movement can feel more challenging. Turning your head while walking, looking around a busy store, reading signs while moving, or changing direction quickly may bring on dizziness or unsteadiness.

The exercises demonstrated in this video are examples of gaze stabilization, convergence, and eye-head coordination work that may be used in vestibular rehabilitation. The goal is to gradually help your brain make better use of the information coming from your eyes, inner ear, and body as you move.

A vestibular therapist can assess what may be contributing to your symptoms and choose exercises that match your needs, tolerance, and goals.

Knee pain can have a way of showing up after a longer walk, a workout, or a busy day on your feet.

Topical menthol may provide temporary relief from minor knee pain by creating a cooling sensation that changes how discomfort feels. Learn when menthol may be helpful, how it compares with ice and heat, and how it can support your physiotherapy and knee rehabilitation plan. 👇

You’ve been working hard with your physiotherapist and starting to see real progress for your knee pain. But every time you push a little harder—a longer walk, a busier day at work, a return to your favourite sport or activity—the soreness in your knee creeps back in. Between sessions, you wan...

Lindsey has experience working with a variety of patient populations and orthopedic injuries including sports injuries, work-related injuries, repetitive strain injuries and motor vehicle accidents. She combines manual therapy, education and therapeutic exercise to help her clients manage their pain and return to a healthy active lifestyle.

In her spare time, Lindsey keeps busy with her husband, three young girls and dog. She enjoys spending time outdoors, camping, travelling, baking and watching loads and loads of Disney princess movies.

Meet James Murphy

James has been a member of the Lifemark family since 2014. He completed his Master of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Alberta, where he was the recipient of both the Canadian Physiotherapy Association Award and Dr. JR Fowler Award. His passion for the human body, coupled with his desire to educate and help others, led him to enter into this field.

James treats a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, motor-vehicle accident injuries, concussion, and balance and dizziness disorders. He strives to provide his clients with the best, most up to date care possible. It is for this reason that he has completed a number of post-graduate courses in Advanced Orthopaedic Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy, Vestibular and Concussion Rehabilitation, GLA:D for Knee & Hip Osteoarthritis, and Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) from the University of British Columbia.

James has remained actively involved with the University of Alberta’s Department of Physiotherapy. He served as a Clinical Assistant Professor for two years, and is currently a teaching assistant and interim instructor for the department. James has volunteered to be a clinical instructor for a number of physiotherapy students, and was the recipient of the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine’s Clinical Educator of the Year Award in 2018. He also continues to serve as an examiner for the department’s practical exams. James is thrilled that he is able to continue teaching others, as he was a teacher at the high school and middle school levels for almost eight years prior to becoming a physiotherapist.

Outside of work, James enjoys spending time with his family, working out, playing recreational sports, and camping. He is also an avid movie watcher, and can easily lose track of time talking movies.

James truly believes that “within every patient resides a doctor, and we as [physiotherapists] are at our best when we put our patients in touch with the doctor inside them” (Albert Schweitzer). He looks forward to helping you find your “inner doctor” so that you can get back to doing what it is you’re passionate about.

Conference time!

After 3 years, we were finally able to hold conferences in person this year. Yesterday, the Edmonton region held their annual Care Coordinator Manager meeting in South Edmonton. Managers from all over the Edmonton region including Sherwood Park, St. Albert and Leduc were in attendance. There was a lot of learning completed with a bunch of laughs and fun added in to the mix.

It is so nice to finally see all of our managers smiling faces in person.
