Dr. Christine Russo met with the Honourable David Eggen, MLA for Edmonton-North West, to discuss eye care in Alberta.

The conversation focused on the role Doctors of Optometry can play in improving access to timely eye care, including how an expanded scope practice could support more treatment in primary eye-care settings and help reduce pressure on other parts of the health-care system.

They also discussed the procedures and equipment involved in delivering expanded services, and the importance of ensuring continued high-quality vision care remains accessible for Albertans.

We appreciate MLA Eggen taking the time to meet with us and engage in a thoughtful conversation about the current state and future of eye care in Alberta.

Summer's wrapped, the kids are back in class, and life has that back-to-routine rhythm. It's the perfect moment to book the eye exam that's been on your mental to-do list since spring.

A comprehensive exam is about more than updating your prescription. We check the health of your eyes for conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic changes — most of which give no warning signs until there's real damage. Catching them early is where the biggest difference is made. And if it's been more than a year (or you honestly can't remember the last time), that's your sign.

We've been caring for Edmonton eyes since 1938 — and we'd love to see yours. 💙

Today, September 30, we recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

It is a day to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors who continue to share their stories, and the families and communities affected by this painful chapter in Canada’s history.

Reconciliation begins with listening, learning, and understanding. By taking time to reflect and deepen our understanding of Indigenous histories and experiences, we can all play a part in the ongoing journey toward truth and reconciliation.

Those little cobwebs, dots, or squiggles that drift across your vision — especially against a bright sky or a white screen — are floaters, and they're incredibly common. Usually, they're nothing to fear.

As we age, the gel inside the eye (the vitreous) naturally shrinks and pulls away from the retina, a process called posterior vitreous detachment. It scatters a few floaters and the occasional flash of light, and most of the time it's a normal part of aging. But here's the part to remember: a sudden shower of new floaters, bursts of flashing light, or a dark curtain or shadow creeping across your vision can signal a retinal tear or detachment — a true emergency. If that happens, don't wait. Call us or seek urgent care right away.

Not sure if what you're seeing is normal? A quick exam brings peace of mind. 💙

Fall sports season is in full swing, and with it comes one of the most preventable causes of eye injury in kids and adults alike.

A stray puck, an elbow under the basket, a squash ball travelling way too fast — sports account for a surprising number of eye injuries every year, and many of them could be avoided with proper protective eyewear. Sports goggles aren't just for the pros: impact-resistant lenses guard against scratches, blunt trauma, and worse. And if your athlete wears a prescription, we can build that protection right into the lenses so they see sharply and stay safe. One good pair is cheap insurance for a lifetime of clear vision.

Gearing up for the season? Ask us about sports eyewear. 👓

You know the move: holding the menu a little farther away, tilting your phone just so, hunting for your readers for the third time today 👀.
Somewhere around 40, near vision starts to shift — it's called presbyopia, and it happens to all of us.

Progressive lenses are the modern answer. They blend distance, intermediate, and near vision into one seamless lens with no visible line and no swapping between pairs. Look up to see across the room, glance down to read, and everything in between just works. It takes a few days to adjust, but most people wonder how they managed without them. Bonus: they look like regular glasses, so nobody has to know.

Tired of the reading-glasses shuffle? Come see what progressives can do. ✨

Here's a little-known perk: if you're 65 or older, Alberta Health covers a portion of your comprehensive eye exam every year. That's not just a vision check — it's a health check.

As we age, the risk of cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration climbs, and the early stages of all three tend to arrive quietly, with no symptoms you'd notice on your own. An annual exam is the most reliable way to catch these early, when there's the most we can do. Clear vision also keeps you steady on your feet, confident behind the wheel, and independent — which is really what it's all about.

If it's been more than a year, come see us. We'd love to catch up. 🌞

Just when you thought allergy season was behind you, fall shows up with ragweed 😫.

And for a lot of people, the eyes take the hit first.

Itchy, red, watery, puffy eyes are classic signs of allergic conjunctivitis, and Edmonton's ragweed and mould spores make early fall a common flare-up window. A few things help: rinse pollen off your face and hands when you come indoors, keep windows closed on high-pollen days, use a cool compress, and skip the eye-rubbing (we know, it's hard). Cold artificial tears can rinse allergens away and soothe the sting. If it's severe or dragging on, don't just tough it out — we can help sort allergy eyes from other causes and get you comfortable.

Itchy, watery eyes taking over your fall? We're here. 💙
