As part of the YAA's 50th Anniversary, we're highlighting stories from the pages of Yoga Bridge—the voice of Alberta's yoga community for over 50 years.

In Love and Service Through Yoga, Marcia Langenberg reflects on a lifetime of practice, teaching, service, and volunteerism. One passage especially stayed with us.

After being diagnosed with Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease, she found herself returning to past issues of Yoga Bridge. As she reread the articles, she wrote that "their words became a source of comfort and strength."

It's a beautiful reminder that what we share today can continue to support someone years—even decades—later.

Published three times a year, Yoga Bridge brings together the voices, stories, and experiences of YAA members across Alberta. Read the latest issue and explore the Yoga Bridge archives at yoga.ca/yoga-bridge-magazine.

In March 1991, the YAA had 127 members.

Today, we're proud to be a community of 1,292.

Behind those numbers are thousands of moments shared through yoga—and many more still to come.

As we celebrate the YAA's 50th Anniversary, we're grateful to everyone who has helped shape this community.

Whether you've been with us for decades or have only recently found your way here, thank you for being part of the journey.

Here's to everyone who has been part of our first 50 years—and to everyone who will be part of the next.

Yoga meets people where they are.

Since the YAA was founded, one idea has remained at the heart of our work: making yoga more accessible to more people.

Over the years, that commitment has taken many forms—from partnerships with schools, seniors’ residences, Indigenous communities, newcomer organizations, women’s organizations, and correctional facilities, including today’s Community Connections Yoga Tour and Community Wellbeing Yoga Tour.

The programs continue to evolve, but the intention remains the same: to remove barriers and make yoga more welcoming, accessible, and connected to the communities we serve.

If you know a non-profit organization serving an equity-deserving community that may benefit from accessible yoga programming, we’d love to connect.

Learning never ends.

As part of the YAA’s 50th Anniversary, we’re sharing reflections from our Pioneer Interview Series—celebrating the people whose stories, dedication, and wisdom have helped shape the Yoga Association of Alberta over the past 50 years.

This reflection is inspired by YAA Pioneer Shirley Johannsen, whose yoga journey reminds us that learning is not a destination, but a lifelong practice. Over the years, she continued to study with different teachers, explore new perspectives, and allow her understanding of yoga to evolve.

That same spirit of lifelong learning continues to shape the YAA today—from our Core Curriculum and Teacher Training Program to workshops, retreats, and continuing education opportunities for teachers and dedicated practitioners alike.

🌿 What’s one lesson your yoga practice has taught you that has stayed with you over the years?

Every yoga journey begins somewhere.

For YAA Pioneer Shirley Johannsen, yoga wasn’t part of a carefully planned career path. Like many of us, she simply followed a curiosity that eventually became a lifelong practice of learning, teaching, and community.

Looking back over 50 years of the YAA, stories like Shirley’s remind us that there’s no single “right” way to begin. Every teacher was once a student. Every long-term practice started with one class.

✨ What first brought you to yoga? We’d love to hear your story in the comments.

The YAA is pleased to announce our partnership with Alberta Blue Cross on the Community Wellbeing Yoga Tour.

This mobile initiative will bring free, beginner-friendly, trauma-informed yoga sessions to trusted community spaces across Edmonton, including multicultural organizations, Indigenous hubs, newcomer centres, and seniors’ centres.

By removing common barriers such as cost, transportation, unfamiliar environments, and lack of equipment, the program will help make physical activity safer, more welcoming, and more accessible for equity-deserving communities.
The goal is to support participation, confidence, physical literacy, and a stronger sense of belonging through culturally responsive movement experiences.

If you know of a non-profit group serving an equity-deserving population that may be interested in accessible yoga, please contact us at [email protected].
