CRAFT CORNER: Pipe Cleaner Snails 🐌

Looking for a simple, low-prep activity to build communication skills? Look no further! This bead and pipe cleaner snail is a fantastic way to target speech and language goals at home. All you need are colourful pipe cleaners and assorted beads.

Speech Sound Practice:
- Practice the "sn" blend for snail, and "sl" for slow or slide.
- Repeat the word "bead" with each one they thread.

Receptive Language:
- Follow simple sequential directions: "Put one yellow bead on, then one blue bead."
- Work on quantity and colour concepts: "Find two red beads" or "Put more on."

Expressive Language:
- Practice requesting and protesting: "Need a bead!" or "I want the blue one."
- Encourage labeling of sizes and colours: "Look, a tiny purple one!"
- Practice spatial concepts: "The bead goes on the pipe cleaner" and "We twist it into a snail."

Play & Motor Skills:
- Foster fine motor precision by threading the small beads.
- Create and extend patterns with the beads to build early math and thinking skills.
- Work on sequence and narrative skills by recalling the steps to make the craft.

TOY TUESDAY: Piggy Bank 🐷💰
This musical piggy bank is a total crowd-pleaser! It’s perfect for repetitive play, which is key for helping little ones learn and use new words.

Speech Sound Practice:
- Practice the “p” sound for piggy or put, and “k” for coin.
- Model fun animal sounds like “oink oink” or environmental sounds like “clink” when the coin drops.

Receptive Language:
- Follow simple instructions: “Put the coin in” or “Open the door.”
- Work on quantity and size concepts like “more coins” or identifying the “big” pig.

Expressive Language:
- Encourage requesting more coins or asking for “help” to open the side door.
- Practice labeling and counting as each coin goes in: “One, two, three!” or calling out the colours.

Play Skills:
- Work on cause and effect as the pig sings or talks when a coin is inserted.
- Practice fine motor precision while lining up the coins with the slot.
- Use the coins for anticipatory play—hold a coin near the slot and wait for the child to give a signal (like a look or a word) before letting them drop it in!

CLINICAL HIGHLIGHT: Biofeedback in Action 🎙️
When working with older students, bringing visual feedback into therapy can completely transform their engagement and progress!

One of our incredible team members, Shelby, recently used Praat, a speech analysis software, to display a live spectrogram during a session. By comparing nasal versus oral airflow visually, the student could actually see what they were hearing and feeling.

A fantastic way to make speech science fun, engaging, and meaningful for older kids!

TOY TUESDAY: ABC Pops 🍦🔤

These colourful alphabet popsicles are a "sweet" way to build literacy and language skills! They are perfect for hands-on learning and keeping little learners motivated.

Speech Sound Practice:
- Practice the “p” sound for pop, “o” for on/off, and “u” for under.
- Use fun sounds like “pop!” when pulling them apart or “m-m-m” to pretend they are a yummy treat.

Receptive Language:
- Follow directions like “Find the letter B” or “Give me the purple pop.”
- Work on matching skills by finding the letter shell that fits over the correct picture.

Expressive Language:
- Encourage labeling the letters and the pictures on the sticks (e.g., “A is for apple,” “B is for butterfly”).
- Practice requesting specific colours or letters: “I want the orange one” or “Can I have the C?”

Play Skills:
- Practice fine motor strength and coordination by pushing the pieces together and pulling them apart.
- Foster imaginary play by setting up a little "ice cream shop" and taking orders from friends or family.

This wooden latch board is full of surprises! It’s a wonderful tool for building fine motor skills while keeping kids curious about what’s hiding behind every door.

Speech Sound Practice:
- Practice the “l” sound for latch, “o” for open, and “sh” for shut.
- Use fun environmental sounds like “click” or “clack” as you manipulate the metal hardware.
Receptive Language:
- Follow specific directions: “Open the purple house” or “Look behind door number five.”
- Work on spatial concepts like behind, inside, and under.
Expressive Language:
- Encourage descriptive language by talking about what is hidden inside (e.g., “I see two blue dogs!” or “The fish are orange”).
- Practice predicting by asking, “Who is hiding in the yellow house?” before opening the latch.
Play Skills:
