People have been stopping their Metformin because “they heard” it wasn’t good for you, caused long term problems, maybe cancer. "Its all over the news”.
I have not been able to find any recent news reports on Metformin use being dangerous, other than known side effects like gi upset/diarrhoea and the known concern for lactic acidosis if used in renal failure. This is fairly rare issue and occurs with renal failure. Metformin is typically stopped if renal function is diminishing. This should be monitored regularly along with the usual labs for diabetes.
What I did find is that Metformin may slow aging!, and that there seemed to be some benefit in reducing long Covid. It also seems it may reduce cancer risk and is being investigated as a cancer treatment.
So if you have been prescribed metformin please discuss with your health care provider before stopping. Make sure you are monitored regularly for your diabetes.
Here’s what I read:
What is the new discovery about metformin?
In a new study conducted in cynomolgus monkeys, researchers have shown that metformin, a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes, can slow aging in multiple organs, including the brain.Sep 22, 2024
Aging: Diabetes drug metformin may slow down biological clock
Medical News Today.
An earlier NIH-supported clinical trial in 2023 showed that treatment with metformin, commonly used to help control blood sugar, reduced the risk of long COVID by as much as 40% in nearly 1,300 U.S. adults with overweight or obesity, most of whom did not have diabetes. Sep 17, 2024

The prevalence of diabetes is dramatically increasing worldwide. The results of numerous epidemiological studies indicate that diabetic population is not only at increased risk of cardiovascular complications, but also at substantially higher risk of many forms of malignancies. The use of metformin, the most commonly prescribed drug for type 2 diabetes, was repeatedly associated with the decreased risk of the occurrence of various types of cancers, especially of pancreas and colon and hepatocellular carcinoma. This observation was also confirmed by the results of numerous meta-analyses.
