Our little Gumdrops have been busy celebrating the beauty of autumn and Thanksgiving by creating their very own fall trees!

Using double-sided adhesive stickers, the children carefully selected and attached colourful autumn leaves to their tree branches, bringing their creations to life one leaf at a time!

While this activity may seem simple, it was full of wonderful developmental opportunities:

Fine Motor Development: Peeling, grasping, and placing leaves helped strengthen little fingers and improve hand-eye coordination.

Creative Expression: Each child chose where to place their leaves, creating a unique autumn tree of their own.

Colour Recognition: Exploring the beautiful reds, oranges, yellows, browns, and greens of the fall season.

Concentration & Independence: Practising patience, making decisions, and completing their creations with confidence.

We also took the opportunity to talk about the changing seasons, why leaves change colour and fall from trees, and the meaning of Thanksgiving — appreciating the people, experiences, and little things that make us thankful

3, 2, 1… BLAST OFF! World Space Week had our little astronauts spending the day exploring the wonders of outer space through hands-on learning, sensory exploration, and creativity!

🚀 Rocket & Space Light Table: Our little learners used transparent circles to decorate rockets, planets, and UFOs, strengthening their hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and colour recognition.

✂️ Space Scissor Skills: We practised our cutting skills with themed cutting strips, developing hand strength, bilateral coordination, and scissor control.

🌌 Galaxy Sensory Exploration: Our space-themed sensory bin was filled with stars, rockets, astronauts, and other cosmic treasures! The children enjoyed scooping, pouring, searching, and discovering through imaginative play.

🪐 Exploring Our Solar System: We explored the different planets through colouring and visual references, learning about their unique colours and appearances.

📚 Space Stories & Discussions: We read books about outer space, talked about the planets in our solar system, and learned about rockets and how astronauts travel beyond Earth!

Every activity was thoughtfully designed to encourage curiosity, independence, sensory development, and early STEM learning because the universe is a pretty big place, and curiosity is where every great adventure begins!

Our little learners explored Chuseok (추석), one of Korea’s most important traditional holidays — a time centered around family, gratitude, harvest, and sharing food together.

The children made their own colourful bokjumeoni (복주머니), traditional Korean lucky pouches! While bokjumeoni are especially associated with Seollal (Korean Lunar New Year) and wishes for good fortune, they gave us another beautiful opportunity to explore Korean traditions, clothing, symbols, and celebrations.

And, of course, we explored culture through food! The children had the opportunity to try bulgogi, kimbap, kimchi, and Korean fried chicken. We were xperiencing new flavours, textures, and dishes together.

Days like today are about so much more than a craft or a meal. They're an opportunity for our little learners to discover that the world is filled with different traditions, languages, foods, celebrations, and ways of life — all worthy of curiosity and respect.

A beautiful day of gratitude, culture, food, and learning together.

Today we took our learning all the way to Germany as we explored Oktoberfest!

We talked about where Germany is on the map, learned a little about German culture and traditions, and of course, one of our favourite ways to explore a new culture — through food!

Our little Oktoberfest snack included:
🥨 Pretzels
🌭 Wurst sausages
🥔 Kartoffelsalat (German potato salad)
🍎 Apfelstrudel (apple strudel)

Introducing children to celebrations and foods from around the world is such a fun way to encourage curiosity, cultural awareness, and an appreciation for the many different traditions that make our world so interesting.

Our little learners got their hands busy exploring our fall sensory bin today! Scooping, pouring, sorting, filling and discovering — all while building fine motor skills, practicing hand-eye coordination and exploring different textures through play.

Sensory play is one of our favourites because there’s no “right” way to do it. It's so fun seeing them explore and learn from each other. Each child gets to slow down, explore at their own pace and let their curiosity lead the way. 🤎

In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we spent time learning about Indigenous peoples, the importance of listening to their stories, and why we wear orange as we remember that Every Child Matters. For our activity, the children headed outside and each chose their own sticks from nature. We glued them into a triangle, carefully wrapped yarn through them and finished our creations with hanging feathers. Each one turned out completely unique — just like the little hands that made them.

We also talked about dreamcatchers and their Indigenous origins, particularly within Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) tradition, and how they have traditionally been connected with protection and dreams. Rather than simply making a craft, we used the activity as an opportunity to introduce the children to the idea that different cultures have their own traditions, teachings and stories that deserve to be learned about and treated with respect.

At Gumdrop, Truth and Reconciliation isn't something little children are too young to begin learning about. At this age, it starts simply: teaching kindness, respect, belonging, listening to others, appreciating cultures different from our own, and helping children understand that every child deserves to feel safe, loved and valued.

Today was about creating with our hands, learning with open hearts, and beginning conversations that we hope will grow right alongside them.

This experiment was made using oil, coloured water, and droppers!

The children used their fine motor skills to carefully squeeze droplets of coloured water into the oil and watched as something interesting happened… the water stayed separate from the oil! Instead of mixing together, the colourful droplets formed little beads that moved, joined together, and floated through the tray.

But my favourite part was hearing what the children thought they looked like (Raindrops! The universe! Black holes! Stars!)

Activities like this introduce early concepts of density, liquids and cause & effect, while also strengthening hand-eye coordination and fine motor control through the use of droppers.

Science at this age doesn’t need to be about knowing the “right” answer. Sometimes it’s simply about giving children something interesting to explore and asking, “What do you see?”
