Going back to school can be an exciting time, especially getting to see friends or meeting new students or getting into a new classroom. But, going back to school can create a lot of anxiety for children and youth as well, especially if they struggle with or have fears about change.

Research shows that mental health struggles often increase for individuals when they return to school after breaks (like summer break). This may be a time to keep an eye on your child and do more check ins to see if they need support.

Heidema Psychology has therapists available to work with children, youth, and families. Reach out to Lindy to book your first session at [email protected] or call/text (867) 888-3882

August already?

We often go into summer thinking it will be a great time to relax and feel refreshed from the summer sun, but instead you might be juggling childcare, vacations, disrupted routines, work demands, and the pressure to "make the most" of the last weeks of summer.

Burnout doesn't only happen in busy seasons. It can happen when you're trying to keep up with expectations that never seem to slow down.

If you're feeling exhausted, irritable, emotionally drained, or like you have nothing left to give, your mind and body may be asking for more rest, boundaries, and self-compassion. Take some time to figure out things that actually restore your energy and helps you rest before starting a new season.

You don't have to wait until you're completely overwhelmed to seek support. Therapy can be a space to reconnect with yourself, process stress, and build sustainable ways of coping so you can avoid burnout altogether. Your mental health is just as important as getting things done!

If you’re noticing these signs in yourself, you may need some more time to focus on supporting your nervous system and building a sense of safety. Try muscle relaxation or stretching, deep breathing, finding things around you with your five senses, and connecting with people who help you feel safe. If your community is on evacuation notice or alert, preparing a “just in case” bag of essentials or keepsakes that you’d like to take with you can make things feel more predictable too.

Remember that you are not alone 🩵there are many communities that have made it through wildfires, and you will too.

Today can bring mixed emotions. Take a moment to check in with yourself:

What am I feeling today?

What is keeping me grounded?

What can I choose to celebrate? What am I not obligated to celebrate?

What do I want to carry into July?

Happy Indigenous People’s Day! Today we are celebrating the major milestones and resilience of Indigenous people and recognizing the deep seated hardships they have overcome, and are continuing to overcome, to get to where they are today.

Indigenous People are unique in the many ways they live their life, and are deserving of a unique way of supporting their mental health.

The First Nations Mental Wellness Framework demonstrates how mental wellness is a balance of the mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional states, and the supports that must be in place to achieve mental wellness.

The framework begins with:

🌱Hope, which is promoted by connection to the spirit

🌱A sense of belonging, created by a connection to family, community, land, and ancestry

🌱A sense of meaning, which comes from knowing who you are and where you come from, allowing you to think, feel, and understand life from an Indigenous perspective

🌱Purpose, coming from understanding the unique First Nations ways of being and doing in the world.

Indigenous lives matter, and we need to honour their ways of life that bring them closer to mental wellness 🪶
