One of the conversations I had with a patient this week really stuck with me.
They asked, âWhich supplements are actually worth taking? Which ones will make the biggest difference?â
Itâs a great questionâbut before we even talked about supplements, we found ourselves circling back to something much more important.
The foundations.
Itâs easy to get caught up wondering:
⢠Which omega-3 is best?
⢠Should I be taking magnesium?
⢠Whatâs the best supplement for recovery, inflammation, or energy?
But if youâre sleeping 5-6 hours a night, eating mostly processed foods, never strength training, or barely moving throughout the week⌠no supplement is going to make up for that.
The biggest improvements in your health almost always come from getting the basics right.
Ask yourself:
â
Am I getting at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week?
â
Am I strength training at least twice a week?
â
Is most of my nutrition coming from real, whole foods?
â
Am I getting enough protein to support my goals?
â
Am I drinking enough water?
â
Am I getting enough high-quality sleep?
â
Am I giving my brain a break from screens before bed?
These are the habits that truly move the needle.
Donât get me wrongâI use supplements, recommend them when appropriate, and believe they absolutely have a place. They can help fill nutritional gaps, support recovery, and complement a healthy lifestyle.
But supplements are exactly thatâa supplement to the fundamentals, not a replacement for them.
If youâre looking to invest in your health, start with the habits that give you the greatest return. Once those foundations are in place, thatâs when supplements can provide that extra edge.
Health isnât built on one magic pill. Itâs built on the choices we make every single day.
What foundation are you working on right now?
