You’ve likely heard some (possibly scary) things about the transition stage of labour.

In the transition stage, you experience:
- 8-10cm Dilation
- Contractions 2-3mins apart for 60-75 seconds
- Feelings of Loss of Control

You can:
- Change Positions Frequently
- Stay In The Moment
- Use Your Coping Techniques & Visualize

The transition stage is intense. Not going to down play it.

But, you can be prepared for this stage of labour and so much of it comes down to your mindset.

In the Empowered Birth course we go over why this happens, what to expect and how to cope with it.

The great thing is - you’re that much closer to meeting your new baby!

Empowered Birth is my signiature, online prenatal course. I’ve just revamped the entire thing and it’s better than ever!

Don’t underestimate a good manual pump!

What is your experience with them?

If you’re expecting or in the market for a pump - I highly recommend you check out my All About Pumping Guide. It’ll help you learn the best pump to get based on YOUR goals without wasting hundreds - and how to use it properly!

It was also made for CANADIANS. Lots of info you see online about pumps is geared towards the US, which isn’t always helpful here!

Sometimes the issue is simple! SWELLING!

Add reverse pressure softening to your early postpartum toolkit!

Reverse pressure softening (sometimes referred to as RPS) is an easy to learn, quick technique that will help your baby latch on if they are struggling due to engorgement and inflammation during those first few days when your milk is coming in.

You are using this gentle pressure to push some of the inflammation or milk away from the ar**la (darker skin around the ni**le).

This provides a bit more elasticity so baby actually has something to latch on to!

How to do it:
1. Take 3-4 fingers and place them on either side of the ni**le (ar**la)
2. Pull gently in towards the chest for 10-15 seconds, typically.
3. Then, move your fingers above and below the ni**le (the opposite of what you were just doing) and repeat.

A few drops of colostrum is completely normal!

Let’s learn how to do antenatal hand expression / colostrum harvesting

Check with your health care provider to ensure it is safe for you to begin harvesting colostrum around 37 weeks gestation.

(There are only a few exceptions as to why this wouldn’t be safe!)

- Start with messaging your breast. Remember, your breasts are delicate. Be GENTLE.
- Push back (towards chest wall), compress and release. And repeat!
-Catch any drops with a syringe or into a clean cup.

I know secondhand pumps are temping but..

Single user breast pumps are meant to be just that - for one person.

One of the main reasons why is because they will lose suction.

Although it is harder to buy and sell second hand pumps on most social media platforms
- it’s probably not the best idea, anyway.

You can’t guarantee the quality.

You can’t guarantee how much it’s been used or how old it is.

And you also can’t guarantee that it hasn’t been contaminated inside.

If you are buying a second hand pump:

- Consider investing in back flow valves
- Know the person you are buying it from. Ask them where and how it was stored, and how old it is.
- Replace all of the parts that go with it (tubing, membranes, bottles, flanges, etc
Have questions? Let me know below!

PS I have a low cost guide all about pumping and how to choose the right breast pump for YOU - without wasting hundreds. Comment “PUMPGUIDE” or grab it in my bio!

This was made SPECIFICALLY for Canadians!

Your baby hit birth weight.. now what?

FAQ: When my baby gets back to birth weight, am I allowed to let them sleep as long as they want to?

Typical answer is: yes!

Barring any complications that you would be working with a lactation consultant or your primary healthcare provider to solve, there are very few other exceptions that would prevent you from letting them sleep.

A couple of things you want to watch for:

-Ensure baby doesn’t have jaundice
-Ensure baby is continuing to gain weight
-Ensure your baby has a good latch, suction and transfer of milk
-Ensure that they are having enough pee’s and poo’s

If you’re at all worried about how your baby is feeding, weight gain, etc - reach out to a lactation consultant or your trusted HCP.

Birth is hard work, for you AND for them.

Whether your labour was long, fast, assisted with forceps or vacuum, or ended in a C-Section, your baby’s body went through something significant.

Sometimes that tension doesn’t just resolve on its own.

It shows up as:

👉Trouble latching or difficulty feeding at breast or bottle

👉Gassiness, reflux, or colic that nothing seems to fix

👉Favouring one side or difficulty turning their head (torticollis)

👉A flat spot developing on their head (plagiocephaly, brachycephaly)

👉Tension before or after a tongue tie revision

👉Arching, stiffening, or general discomfort nobody can explain

👉Has been lifting their head up since birth and everyone comments “Oh! They’re so strong”

👉A baby who seems unhappy even when every need is met

👉Difficulty with tummy time or sleeping comfortably

I know how awful it feels to watch your baby struggle and not be able to figure out why.

As a nurse and IBCLC, I have worked with hundreds of parents with babies who were told they’re completely fine — when they’re clearly not.

Let’s change that!
