Exploring Mindfulness – The Satipatthana Sutta
The Satipatthana Sutta or the Discourse on the Four Establishments of Mindfulness was taught by the Buddha as the “direct path to realization”. This discourse is a foundational Buddhist text with the fullest instructions on training in mindfulness (satipatthana). A key aspect of mindfulness is to be fully aware of what is going on right now and the discourse helps us to cultivate awareness in all parts of our lives – whether in formal meditation or in daily life and, thus, to progress on the path to liberation.
In this eight month program, there will be guided meditations, talks and time for discussion, as well as walking meditation and some time to meditate on your own. We’ll look at what mindfulness is, its benefits and how to cultivate the four satipatthanas. The Buddha taught that the opportunity to practice in this way can help us to see more deeply into the qualities of the heart and mind that can lead us to greater wisdom and compassion in our lives.
The cost is $100 for all 8 modules or $25 for each one if attending all 8 does not work for you and let me know if an alternate amount would be best for you. We will meet monthly on Saturday afternoons from 1 to 4 pm, beginning on Oct. 17 at the Shambhala Centre which has everything we need for practice. This program is suitable for all meditators whatever your level of experience!
