May is maternal mental health month, and one thing I notice often is that we talk a lot about pregnancy, and everyone loves a squishy baby, but we don’t talk nearly enough about mothers.

Maternal mental health conditions are the most common complication of pregnancy and birth, affecting 1 in 5 mothers. And yet, 75% of those struggling never receive treatment. They’re also one of the leading causes of maternal death, accounting for nearly a quarter of pregnancy-related deaths, and still, so many women are carrying this alone.

Maternal mental health includes more than just postpartum depression. It can show up as:
• anxiety that won’t go away
• intrusive thoughts that feel scary or shameful
• rage, irritability, or emotional numbness
• feeling disconnected from yourself, your baby, or your life
• grief, overwhelm, or a sense that something just isn’t right

And certain experiences can make it even harder—past trauma, birth trauma, NICU stays, poverty, lack of support, systemic barriers, or simply not being seen and understood.

Here’s what I want every mother to hear this month:

You are not the only one feeling this way. You are not failing. And you were never meant to do this without support.

Maternal mental health is not a luxury.
It’s essential healthcare. If you’re struggling, support exists, and with it, you can be well.

This month and always, let’s hold space for mothers instead of asking to hold the baby, and let’s centre conversations about women and the essential need for timely, holistic, accessible perinatal care.

Hi, I’m Jaimee.

I’m a therapist and the co-owner of Balanced Wellness Collective. I’ve been doing this work for over 10 years, and at this point my approach is pretty grounded in being real with people — not overly clinical, not surface-level, and definitely not about pretending everything can be neatly “fixed.”

I’m trained in EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and Exposure and Response Prevention for OCD, and I tend to work from a more psychodynamic, trauma-informed lens. What that looks like in practice is that I’m usually paying attention to the deeper patterns — the stuff underneath the anxiety, the overwhelm, the relationship dynamics — not just the symptom that brought you in.

As a perinatal mental health and menopause mental health certified therapist, a lot of the people I work with are in seasons of life that feel like a lot to carry. Parenting, identity shifts, fertility and loss, or just that underlying sense of “why does this feel so hard when on paper my life looks fine?” I also have three kids of my own, including a neurodivergent child, so I get (personally, not just professionally) how layered and relentless that mental load can be.

Over time, I’ve moved further away from the idea that therapy is about teaching people how to cope better or think more positively. Most of the time, it’s about slowing things down enough to actually understand what’s happening internally, and then finding ways to respond to yourself differently.

If you’re someone who tends to hold a lot together on the outside but feels like you’re quietly struggling underneath, you’d probably feel at home in the kind of work I do.

I’m glad you’re here 🤍
