Many people come to therapy believing they need to get rid of certain parts of themselves.

The anxious part.
The angry part.
The people-pleasing part.
The inner critic.

But Internal Family Systems (IFS), developed by Richard Schwartz, offers a different perspective.

At its core, IFS suggests that every part of us developed to help or protect us at some point in our lives.

While some of these protective strategies may no longer serve us today, they often began with a positive intention.

Instead of asking, "What's wrong with me?" IFS encourages us to ask, "What is this part trying to do for me?"

That shift from judgment to curiosity can change the way we relate to ourselves.

Which "part" of yourself do you think has been working the hardest to protect you?

Not every uncomfortable feeling is a red flag.
And not every red flag creates an immediate emotional reaction.
Sometimes a situation feels intense because it touches something painful from the past. Other times, your discomfort may be pointing to a real concern in the present.
Learning to tell the difference can help you make decisions from a place of awareness rather than fear or confusion.
Both deserve attention.
The goal is not to dismiss either one, but to understand what each may be telling you.

Have you ever realized something was a trigger after first thinking it was a red flag?

Many people assume they are their emotions.

But in IFS therapy, emotions, thoughts, and reactions are often understood as parts of us trying to help, protect, or communicate something important.

When a part becomes highly activated, it can feel like it takes over completely. This is called blending.

Unblending doesn't mean getting rid of difficult emotions.

It means creating enough space to notice them, understand them, and respond more intentionally.

Sometimes healing begins with realizing that a feeling is part of your experience, not your entire identity.

Have you ever had a moment where an emotion felt like it completely took over?

Not every relationship struggle begins with the relationship itself.

Sometimes people are carrying stress, anxiety, emotional exhaustion, past wounds, or personal struggles that quietly affect how they connect, communicate, and respond to each other.

That does not mean the relationship is failing.

It means emotional well-being and relationships are often deeply connected.

Sometimes healing individually can also strengthen the relationship as a whole.

Do you think people separate personal stress from relationship stress enough?

When teenagers are struggling emotionally, it does not always look obvious.

Sometimes it shows up through behavior changes, withdrawal, irritability, or shutting down emotionally.

Many parents naturally focus on correcting the behavior first, without realizing there may be something deeper happening underneath it.

That does not mean boundaries are unimportant.

But emotional support often starts with understanding what a teen may be carrying internally, especially when they do not yet know how to express it themselves.

What’s something you wish more parents understood about teen mental health?

Chronic stress does not always look dramatic.

Sometimes it looks like constantly feeling mentally alert, emotionally drained, or unable to fully relax.

Over time, your nervous system can become so accustomed to survival mode that stress starts to feel normal.

That does not mean your body is okay with carrying it.

Rest, support, and slowing down matter more than many people realize.

Have you noticed how stress shows up in your body lately?

A lot of people expect therapy to be advice-driven or focused on quick solutions.

But therapy is often less about someone telling you what to do and more about helping you understand yourself, your patterns, and your emotional responses in a deeper way.

It can be a space to slow down, process things honestly, and learn healthier ways of coping and communicating.

The goal is not perfection.
It’s awareness, support, and change over time.

What did you think therapy was like before learning more about it?

Not all struggling relationships are loud.

Sometimes couples stop arguing because they’ve stopped trying to communicate what they really feel.

Over time, emotional distance can quietly replace connection, even when things seem “fine” on the surface.

A lack of conflict does not always mean a relationship feels safe, close, or emotionally connected.

Have you ever noticed the difference between peace and disconnection?

Sleep affects more than energy levels.

When your body and mind are consistently exhausted, it becomes harder to regulate emotions, manage stress, and feel mentally present.

Things can start to feel heavier, more frustrating, or more overwhelming than usual.

Sometimes what feels like “too much” is also a sign that your system hasn’t had enough rest for a long time.

Have you noticed how differently you feel after a good rest?
