At Gimli Betel Home, the end of a person’s life is something that is experienced relatively often. The final steps of every resident’s journey are just as important as all the steps that came before. It’s always been extremely important to us that we make sure each resident is treated with dignity, respect, and honour during their last trip down the halls. For years we have made use of “dignity quilts” to cover a resident’s body while they are transported from their room to a hearse. Also called a "passing quilt", the quilts replace sterile body bags or plain sheets with a loving, dignified cover.
Our first quilts at Gimli Betel Home were created by the New Horizon’s Fiber Arts Group and have been in service for nearly a decade. With the passing of time, regular use, and frequent washing, our dignity quilts now show many signs of wear, tear, and fade.
When we reached out to the New Horizons 55+ Fiber Arts Group once again, they were very enthusiastic to respond to our request. After meeting to agree on the design patterns, size, and colour choices, the local quilters went to work and pulled out all the stops. The finished dignity quilts are incredible – so much attention to detail combined with true artistic talent in a breathtaking compilation. Two quilts were made to ensure we had one for each floor, and the results are just awe-inspiring. They are both works of art from the heart that will truly be appreciated for years to come.
Thank you to the wonderful quilters with the New Horizon’s Fiber Arts Group who worked tirelessly to bring our vision to life for us yet again. Special thanks to Allison Atkey, Heather Dankochik, Donna Kerns, and Janice Skene for their dedication and love for this project.
Another amazing example of how the Gimli community as a whole always finds a way to extend their kindness and generosity to the residents of Betel Home.
