Summer months bring excitement and adventure, but they also mean a busier time for our Emergency Department. From outdoor injuries to seasonal illnesses, we see an increase in visits, so longer wait times can sometimes happen.

We know every visit is important, and waiting in the ED can be stressful, especially when you’re not feeling your best. That’s why we want to help you understand why you might be waiting and what’s happening behind the scenes while you're here.

If you have any comments or questions, please contact Patient Relations at [email protected]

Air quality is poor again today (July 16) due to wildfire smoke. Everyone’s health is at risk during heavy smoke conditions. Limit time outdoors and consider rescheduling or cancelling outdoor sports activities and events. Listen to your body. If you are experiencing severe symptoms, seek medical assistance. Check on family and friends who may be at greater risk from the effects of outdoor air pollution.
Use the air quality health index (AQHI) to stay informed.

Introducing our Monday Mental Health Moment!

Every other Monday, we'll be sharing a simple strategy or helpful reminder to support your mental well-being. These small moments are designed to help you pause and prioritize your mental health because taking care of yourself matters.

Belly Breathing (Diaphragmatic Breathing)

Feeling stressed or overwhelmed? Try this simple reset:

🫁 Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly.
🌿 Slowly breathe in through your nose, letting your belly rise.
💙 Exhale slowly through your mouth.

Repeat for 1 to 2 minutes.

This type of breathing helps calm your nervous system and reduce stress.

That's a wrap on Discovery Healthcare Camp! 💜

Dr. Kittmer stopped by with her rotating medical student, Stephan, to share her experiences as a general surgeon and the unique rewards of providing care in a rural community. Students also had the chance to try their hand at suturing by stitching up teddy bears.

Dr. Treasurywala shared what it's like to work as both a family physician and in emergency medicine, giving students an inside look at the fast-paced world of the emergency department. Through fun, hands-on activities, students learned just how important communication and teamwork are during an emergency. They also had the chance to practice CPR and other life-saving skills.

Thank you to all of the healthcare professionals, organizers, donors, and community leaders for making this year's Discovery Healthcare Camp such a memorable week. We can't wait to see what the future holds for these incredible students.

Throwback Thursday! Long before she became Interim Manager of the Emergency Department at AMGH, Laurie Hakkers discovered her passion for healthcare at a summer camp much like Discovery Healthcare Camp.

Her journey is a reminder that early experiences can spark a lifelong passion and inspire future careers dedicated to caring for others. We can't wait to see where this year's campers' journeys begin!

“I attended this camp when I was in grade 11 and it is where my journey in healthcare began. What made this camp unforgettable was that it was my first genuine encounter with the world of healthcare. They gave us hands-on opportunities—suturing stuffed animals, practicing injections on oranges, and even applying casts to fellow campers. These were experiences I had never been exposed to before, and they introduced me to the vast and exciting opportunities that a career in healthcare can offer. It was an eye-opening adventure that set me on a path to make a difference." - Laurie

We had a fantastic day welcoming students from Discovery Healthcare Camp!

As part of their visit to AMGH, students had the opportunity to go behind the scenes with tours of our Lab and Digital Imaging departments, providing a closer look at the innovative work happening every day. They also heard from our President & CEO, Jimmy Trieu, who provided an overview of Huron Health System, the healthcare sector, and the many career opportunities available within a hospital.

Students also learned about the importance of privacy and patient rights, the role nutrition plays in overall health and well-being, and participated in activities that tested their knowledge of different codes and how to respond in various situations.

It was a great opportunity to showcase healthcare in action!
