My whole life I have been someone who feels deeply, loves whole-heartedly, and listens with empathy. While I am not a therapist, I am someone who has worked with young people for over 3 decades. Over that time I have come to understand that we all travel our own journey and sometimes all that is needed for a young person to get through some of the more challenging times is an adult who is not their parent, who listens without judgment, who can offer comfort and some perspective. Growing up can be murky, yet clarity can be found with the right kind of support. By walking and talking immersed in the beauty of the outdoors, rather than sitting in a confined space...there is a freedom that can occur. There is an expansiveness to the outdoors that allows conversations to flow. Over my many years as an outdoor educator, I have discovered that it's easier for young people to open up when they are walking beside someone, rather than having to look them in the eye. John Burrows has a famous quote: "I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and have my senses put in order." I couldn't agree more that nature offers an opportunity to slow down and connect with our inner landscape. My goal with WALK & TALK is simply to offer young people a supportive, sincere, trusting connection that will allow them to be heard and feel valued. We are collectively living through a time where everyone can use a little support, while at the same time getting outside - away from screens and immersing themselves in the beauty of the outdoors.
