The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is an area we tend to hold a lot of tension for a variety of reasons including clenching or grinding, extended dental procedures, adjusting to orthodontic appliances, or head and neck injuries. TMJ tension is not always obvious, but may be something your dentist or hygienist mentions to you. It is also something I like to screen for with headaches or neck stiffness, as they are often connected.

Like all joints, the TMJ can also get injuries. If you have symptoms of pain, popping, clicking or decreased range of motion, massage therapy may help.

A stand alone TMJ treatment is typically a 30 minute appointment including massage of the neck, head and face (it’s actually quite relaxing). For patients who are comfortable with it, I ideally also include intra-oral massage, which I promise you is less awkward than it sounds (and don’t worry, this part of the treatment uses gloves). TMJ massage can also be incorporated into your other treatments and does not have to be booked separately.

If this sounds like something you can benefit from, book a treatment today and lets get you some relief in that jaw!

Hello Golden!

I felt we are due for a re-introduction since I’ve been settled in to my little office downtown for a bit over a year now!

Experience:
I have been practicing as a massage therapist since 2003, having worked in a variety of settings including multi-disciplinary clinics, backcountry lodges and on-site at running races. In 2008 I joined the medical staff of the Canadian Ski Cross team and traveled with them for 6 years on the World Cup Circuit, including the 2010 Olympics. Returning to private practice to serve the community of Golden has delivered the perfect work-life balance, while providing an interesting variety of clinical work including injury rehabilitation, athlete prep and recovery, perinatal care, TMJ treatment, as well as chronic pain and stress management.

Practice Focus:
I love working with athletes of all ages, whether recreational or professional. As Dr Stacy Sims says, "anyone who exercises on purpose is an athlete" and I couldn't agree more. I firmly believe exercise and movement are the key to health and helping people keep moving with whatever activity makes them happy brings me so much joy.

What I’m geeking out on these days:
My most recent educational focus is on biomechanics (especially feet), therapeutic exercise and pain science. I also have a keen interest in women’s health and understanding how aging and hormonal changes through the transition of each life stage affects our muscle, bone and joint health.

If you’re looking for an addition to your healthcare team, I’d love to be a part of it.

Happy Monday!
Just a heads up, I’ve updated my schedule and added in a some more Saturday availability. My last Saturday will be April 4, before changing over to my Spring schedule of Monday to Thursday. April 4 is also the last day my office will be open before taking a little Spring break to recharge. As always, the booking link can be found in the bio or shoot me text, phone call or email!

Tumbler Ridge Tragedy:
Member Call for Volunteers

Yvonne Poulin, a long-standing RMTBC member, was working in her clinic in the hospital in Tumbler Ridge when the high school shooting tragedy occurred on February 10th.

The next day, Yvonne set up a temporary location away from reporters’ reach to do relaxation massage on high school teachers and first responders.

Together with a friend who's an acupuncturist, she found a venue and created the Tumbler Ridge Community Healing Space where locals receive FREE 20-minute acupuncture and/or relaxation massage in a quiet, open-spaced setting. As of February 26th, over 150 free treatments have been provided.

The goal is to keep the space open until the end of March – or longer.

Yvonne has issued a call for volunteers and support. Details in the link in yellow text at the top of our home page - https://rmtbc.ca/

🦴 Exercise & Bone Health in Women: What Actually Works

Based on multiple recent meta-analyses and NMAs in postmenopausal women

Bone loss after menopause is real—but exercise does help. The strongest evidence across multiple large meta-analyses

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bone.2020.115697

shows a few clear themes:

• Resistance training matters most. Lifting weights consistently helps maintain and modestly improve bone density at the spine and hip.
• Intensity matters. Higher-effort resistance training produces larger benefits for spine bone density than lower-effort exercise.
• Mixing things works well. Programs that combine resistance training with weight-bearing or impact activities tend to outperform single-mode exercise.
• Walking alone isn’t enough. It’s good for health, but by itself, it has little effect on bone density.
• Low-impact “mind–body” exercise helps stability. Activities like Tai Chi may slow bone loss at the spine and reduce fall risk, even if bone gains are modest.
• No single “best” exercise. Bones respond to load, variety, and consistency, not gimmicks.

For women, especially after menopause, progressive resistance training—ideally combined with some weight-bearing or impact work—is the most reliable way to support bone health.

Don’t chase the #1 exercise.
Prioritize progressive resistance training, add impact if appropriate, and focus on long-term adherence.

👉 Translation: bones respond to load. Progressive resistance training is the backbone (literally) of bone health.

Exercise also reduces fall risk, which may matter more for fracture prevention than small changes in bone density alone.

🦴 Lift with intent. Progress safely. Stay consistent.

P.S. Bone loves whole foods, fruits and vegetables, calcium, vitamin D and protein! 😉
