A moment taken out of the daily tasks of the office to remember…
I remember the start of grade 12…
16 years old…
I remember the nearly dark, early morning drive with peers as our director drove us quietly to school because jazz choir met before the bells rang.
I remember hearing him share that something terrible had happened as he pulled the big TV cart out and plugged it in.
I remember seeing the tears silently running down his face as he turned on the news.
I remember the hard school chairs lined as we sat and stared watching the events unfold that morning.
I remember not fully comprehending what we were watching - the atrocities that were unfolding.
I remember going from class to class, news playing in each one…
the depth of understanding growing with each hour…
the grief and uncertainty consuming as we contemplated so many things…
the overwhelming sadness for people we never knew…
the fear felt for those of us who had American relatives serving in the military being called out to war…
the terrified feeling of not being safe anymore…
I remember the prayers that were being lifted in a public school that prohibited the Bible to be in the library and in which lunch time prayer groups were not supported - the ones we held anyways!
I remembered how life was forever changed…
