Sometimes the words we reach for in hard moments aren’t the words our kids can actually use.

When a child is dysregulated, they may not have access to reasoning, reflection, or the coping skills they can use when calm.

That’s why the goal in the moment isn’t always to explain, correct, or fix.

Sometimes it’s simply to help them feel safe enough to come back to themselves.

A calmer body can have the conversation later. šŸ’›

Connection first. Teaching second.

Save this for the next hard moment. 🌱

Even Winston has to learn how to regulate. 🐾

New spaces, new smells, new people, new expectations… that’s a lot for a puppy brain to take in.

Regulation doesn’t mean being calm all the time. It means learning how to notice, settle, recover, and come back to a place where we can think and connect again.

That’s part of what Winston is practicing as he spends more time in the clinic—and honestly, it’s a pretty good reminder for all of us too. 🌱

Regulation is a skill. Skills take practice.

Follow along as Winston learns the foundations for his future work. šŸ’›

We don’t outgrow the need for co-regulation. šŸ’›

When we hear co-regulation, we often picture a parent soothing a crying baby or helping a toddler through a meltdown.

But our need for safe, regulated connection doesn’t suddenly disappear when we turn 5… or 15… or 35.

What changes is what that support looks like.

A toddler might need you close, using a soft voice and helping their body settle.

A school-aged child might need movement, validation and help putting words to what they’re feeling.

A teenager might need space, while also knowing you’re still there when they’re ready.

And as adults? We still borrow calm from the people around us. We still need someone who can listen without immediately fixing, stay grounded when we’re overwhelmed, and remind us that we don’t have to navigate hard things alone.

🌱 Co-regulation isn’t about taking emotions away.
It’s about offering enough safety and connection that someone can move through them.

And over time, those experiences help children build the capacity to regulate themselves.

Which age feels hardest to navigate in your house right now? Tell me below. šŸ‘‡

Save this one for the next time you’re wondering, ā€œWhat do I actually DO when they’re dysregulated?ā€

Things have been a little quiet around here lately… but definitely not quiet behind the scenes. 🐾

Meet Winston. šŸ’›

This little guy has brought a whole lot of puppy chaos, laughter, learning, chewed-up things, and very early mornings into my life — but he’s also here for a pretty special reason.

I’m currently completing training in Animal-Assisted Therapy, and I’m raising Winston with the hope that, as he grows and develops the right temperament and skills, he may eventually join me in my work supporting children and teens.

There is a lot that happens before a dog is ready for this kind of work, and right now Winston’s biggest jobs are simply being a puppy, learning about the world, building confidence, and having lots of positive experiences. 🌱

And I’m learning right alongside him.

I’m excited to share a little more of that journey here — the training, the learning, the puppy moments, and eventually, what thoughtfully integrated Animal-Assisted Therapy can look like.

For now, we grow. 🌱🐾

Welcome to Sprout & Thrive, Winston. šŸ’›

Working with teens has taught me that beneath the sarcasm, silence, humor, shutdowns, and ā€œI don’t careā€ moments… there’s usually a young person trying their best to feel understood.

Teenagers don’t need perfect adults.
They need safe, regulated, emotionally present ones šŸ¤

Honestly, my teen clients teach me something new every day.

🌱 BIG NEWS 🌱

Sprout & Thrive is getting a puppy… and he’ll be training to become a therapy dog at the clinic.

I’ve seen firsthand how calming, comforting, and connecting animals can be for children, teens, and families — especially during moments of anxiety, overwhelm, and emotional stress.

Over the next little while, we’ll be focusing on:
āœ”ļøsocialization
āœ”ļøtraining
āœ”ļøbuilding confidence
āœ”ļølots of patience (and probably lots of puppy chaos too)

I’m so excited to eventually bring this support into the counselling space and share part of this journey with you all šŸ¤

Stay tuned for puppy updates, training moments, and all the behind-the-scenes adventures ahead 🌻
