Happy Nurses Week!
Thank you for your compassion, dedication, and strength. Your care and kindness make a difference in countless lives every single day. We are truly grateful for all that you do - today and always.

This week, we’re celebrating the nurses who bring skill, compassion, calm, humour, and heart to some of life’s hardest moments.

At South Muskoka Memorial Hospital, nurses are there for our community every day and every hour, caring for patients, supporting families, and helping people feel seen and safe when they need it most.

To all our nurses, thank you for everything you do and for the care you bring to our community each day. Happy !

We find out really quickly how different the silence feels when the person that filled it is suddenly gone.

Before loss, the quiet in the house can feel restful, even comforting.

But after loss, that same quiet can take on a weight that’s hard to describe unless you’ve lived it.

Here’s the thing…it’s not just the absence of sound, it’s the absence of them.

I was always a reader and never watched much TV. But after my loss I found myself always leaving the TV on just so there was some background noise in the house. I didn’t care what was on, but it created the illusion that I wasn’t really alone.

The sound of conversation, laughter, even commercials, things I used to tune out, suddenly became comforting. It was background noise and I needed it.

Because it made the house feel a little less empty.

I’ve had people share with me that they talk to Alexa in ways they never expected.

What starts as a simple request of playing music and checking the weather turns into something that feels like companionship.

It’s really just about reaching for something.

Anything.

That breaks up the feeling of being alone.

Nighttime was really hard for me too. So I’d leave the radio on all night. It’s not that it replaced the person who I was missing. Trust me, it didn’t even come close. But it at least filled the silence a little. It gave my mind that was racing all night something else to focus on.

These are the kinds of things people don’t always talk about when it comes to grief. They’re not the big, visible things. They’re the small, private adjustments we have to make just to get through the day or the night.

And we do it because we’re trying to find our way through a space that used to be shared, learning how to live in it as it is now.

Because in a world that can feel incredibly quiet after loss…even a little background noise can make it feel less lonely.

Thank you, Palmeri’s YIG!!

What an exciting celebration for the team at Palmeri’s Your Independent Grocer
👏👏

An official grand reopening took place on Friday May 8, following an extensive store makeover and the space looks terrific!

Congratulations to owners Marcello and Loreta Palmeri on the successful completion of their renovation project and for making such a significant investment in both their business and the community.

The celebration also included a generous surprise for GAP, with a $5,000 donation presented by Palmeri’s in support of helping neighbours in need. We are incredibly grateful for this meaningful contribution and the community spirit behind it!

I hear a car outside.
Footsteps coming up the walk.
A key turning.
A door opening.

A part of me thinks: “Maybe it’s them.”

Not because I’m in denial.
Not because I don’t know they died.

I just expect to hear their voice.
See them on their side of the bed.

How can this be real?

And then it hits.
The painful truth.
The sudden emptiness.

Those moments where love outruns reality.

Love keeps looking for them.
Love keeps remembering them.
Love keeps expecting them to come back.

And those moments break my heart.

Palliative care is whole-person care, for any stage of life-limiting illness.
Illness impacts more than just your body, it touches every part of your life. Palliative care helps by addressing:
➡️ Pain and symptom management
➡️ Emotional and mental health
➡️ Spiritual support
➡️ Practical day-to-day needs

Palliative care also supports those providing care and loved ones, helping them through the journey, and offering grief support.

At Hospice Muskoka, we provide compassionate, whole-person care to seasonal and permanent residents of South and West Muskoka as well as their families. If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, we are here to help.

The greatest gift isn't something you wrap.
It’s peace of mind. By pre-planning your arrangements, you remove the financial and emotional weight from your children's shoulders. Let them remember your life, not stress over the logistics of your passing.

Who is in the driver's seat of your final wishes? 🚗
Pre-planning isn't about dwelling on the end; it's about taking control. It ensures your preferences are honored and relieves your family of the burden of guessing "what would they have wanted?" If you have a plan elsewhere, remember: it is fully transferable to us.
