💚 Confidence Starts with Being Prepared

Growing up means taking on new challenges, making important decisions, and becoming more independent. Confidence isn't about having all the answers - it's about knowing how to respond when it matters most.

Learning first aid does more than prepare you for emergencies. It helps you:
✔ Stay calm under pressure
✔ Make thoughtful decisions
✔ Take on new responsibilities with confidence
✔ Be ready to help someone in need

Whether you're preparing for your first job, planning to babysit, volunteering in your community, or simply want to build practical life skills, first aid is an investment in yourself.

At St. John Ambulance, our first aid courses are designed to help young people develop confidence, independence, and skills that last a lifetime.

Babysitter Emergency Readiness

A great babysitter does more than keep children entertained - they're also prepared to respond if something unexpected happens.

Before parents head out, every babysitter should know:
📱 Where the emergency contact is
🏠 Any potential hazards in the home
🚑 When it's time to call 911

One simple step that can make a big difference?
🩹 Know where the first aid kit is before you need it!

Being prepared helps you stay calm, act confidently, and keep children safe when every second counts.

Want to build your confidence and learn these important skills?

St. John Ambulance Babysitting Basics teaches young people how to care for children safely, handle common emergencies, and become responsible, confident babysitters.

☀️ Heat Exhaustion vs. Heat Stroke

Hot weather can affect anyone, especially during outdoor work, sports, travel, or physical activity.

Heat exhaustion may include:
✅ Heavy sweating
✅ Weakness or dizziness
✅ Headache
✅ Nausea
✅ Cool, pale, or clammy skin
✅ Muscle cramps

Move the person to a cooler area, loosen tight clothing, cool them with wet cloths, and offer small sips of water if they are fully alert.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency.

Signs may include:
🚨 Confusion or unusual behaviour
🚨 Fainting or loss of consciousness
🚨 Hot skin
🚨 Seizures
🚨 A very high body temperature

Call 911 immediately and begin cooling the person while waiting for emergency services. Do not give anything to drink if they are confused, drowsy, or unconscious.

When in doubt, treat the situation seriously. Heat-related illness can worsen quickly.

**First Aid Instructors do more than teach skills—they help build confidence throughout the entire community.**

By guiding people through hands-on training, instructors help individuals feel prepared to step forward, stay calm, and respond when an emergency happens. Every class creates more capable workplaces, safer homes, and stronger communities.

St. John Ambulance Sudbury is looking for **First Aid Instructors** who want to share practical knowledge, support others, and make a meaningful difference.

This is an opportunity to help people feel ready for the moments that matter most—and to know that the skills you teach may one day help save a life.

**Interested in joining our Sudbury team? We’d love to hear from you.**

👀 What happens during a St. John Ambulance training day?

A first aid course is much more than sitting and listening.

Participants learn through a combination of instruction, discussion, demonstrations, and hands-on practice. Depending on the course, that may include:

✅ Practising CPR and using an AED
✅ Learning how to respond to choking
✅ Bandaging wounds and managing injuries
✅ Recognizing signs of medical emergencies
✅ Working through realistic scenarios
✅ Building confidence through practical skills

Our goal is to create a supportive learning environment where participants feel comfortable asking questions, practising, and learning at their own pace.
By the end of the day, you leave with more than a certificate—you leave better prepared to help when it matters most.

☀️ Summer First Aid Kit Checklist

Summer often means more time outdoors, road trips, campfires, sports, and family activities. Before heading out, take a few minutes to check your first aid kit.

Make sure it includes:
✅ Adhesive bandages in several sizes
✅ Sterile gauze pads and roller bandages
✅ Medical tape
✅ Antiseptic wipes
✅ Disposable gloves
✅ Tweezers
✅ Scissors
✅ Instant cold pack
✅ Emergency blanket
✅ CPR barrier device
✅ Personal medications, when needed
✅ Emergency contact information

It is also a good idea to replace expired, damaged, or used supplies and keep your kit somewhere easy to reach.

A well-stocked first aid kit cannot prevent every emergency, but it can help you respond quickly when something happens.

Until the end of July, first aid kits at St. John Ambulance are 20% off.
