Hail to the humble pencil :)

A new brain study just gave teachers some solid science to back up what they already suspected.

Researchers fitted 36 students with hairnets holding 256 sensors, then asked them to write words by hand and type the same words on a screen. The brain scans told a clear story. Writing by hand lit up connections across wide areas of the brain, specifically in the frequency bands linked to memory. Typing on a screen produced almost no activity in those same regions.

The researchers did not mince words in their conclusion. Children need to practice handwriting in school from an early age, because those physical strokes are building the brain connections that support learning.

The finding is not a case against technology, though. The same researchers made a point of saying schools need to keep up with screens as well. The message is that handwriting and digital tools belong side by side in the classroom, not in competition with each other.

For teachers who have long felt that putting a pen in a child's hand matters, there is now a brain scan to prove it.
