At the heart of IFS practice lies the Self that can lead our parts toward greater peace and equilibrium. As four IFS practitioners with a preoccupation with the more-than-human world (MTHW), we are offering this discussion in order to present a radical concept: that the Self is by design an ecological Self, or Eco-Self, born and inseparable from the MTHW. We propose that only by making explicit this interconnection, and by deepening and nurturing it, can we truly be Self-led. We see the Eco-Self as integral to a decolonizing, life-affirming IFS model where healing is not exploitative but rather stems from being in right relationship with the MTHW.
Going a step further, we propose that being intentional about the nature of the Eco-Self is necessary to foster healing in our clients. Since unburdening requires Self-energy, and Self-energy derives from this field of interconnectedness, then it follows that unburdening cannot truly occur in a context where the psyche and Self are limited to the level of the individual. We will discuss ways to address and assist a system that is exiled from Eco-Self, so that deep, reciprocal healing can occur, to the great benefit of both our human clients and the more-than-human World in which they are embedded.
