Seeing some blue ribbons around town today? July 30 is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, a day for raising awareness about the global prevalence and scope of human trafficking, as well as the local supports available for survivors.

For the second year in a row, StatsCan reports that Guelph has the highest rates of police-reported human trafficking in Canada.

Guelph also has one of the most committed networks of survivor supports in the country, meaning that there's no wrong door for survivors to knock on when they're looking for support from a service organization.

G-W Women in Crisis is proud of the work our community does through the Guelph Wellington Action Committee on Gender-Based Violence to coordinate services and wrap around survivors.

These and other partners make the community safer for all of us:

Thousands of people in our community are impacted by the drug poisoning crisis.

-Since 2016, at least 55,000 lives have been lost from opioid-related deaths in Canada.
-In 2025, national drug toxicity deaths decreased by 23% compared to 2024, driven in part by factors such as naloxone distribution and other public health responses. Despite this decline, the impact remains significant, with an average of 15 substance-related deaths per day in Canada (Public Health Agency of Canada).
-In Guelph and Wellington, there were at least 28 fatalities from drug poisoning in 2025. The majority of these fatalities occur in private residences (Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health).

Join us Aug 20th in Mount Forest & Aug 27th in Guelph for Drug Poisoning Awareness Day where we will honour those we have lost and take collective action to support prevention, compassion and care.

In light of the recent storm causing power outages in Wellington County and surrounding areas, it's important to ensure the safety of your food and private well water during and following these disruptions.
πŸ• πŸ₯— Food Safety During Power Outages
β€’ Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to maintain cold temperatures.
β€’ Discard perishable foods like meat, dairy, and leftovers if the power has been out for 4 hours or more.
β€’ When in doubt, throw it outβ€”consuming spoiled food can lead to illness.
For comprehensive food safety guidelines, visit: https://bit.ly/3T18n2t and refer to our "Food Safety During a Power Failure" resource: https://bit.ly/4eUe2yD

🚰 πŸ’§ Private Well Water Safety
If you rely on a private well, avoid using water during the outage to prevent depressurizing the system, which can lead to contamination.
Once power is restored:
β€’ Flush the system by running water for several minutes to clear stagnant water.
β€’ Ensure your treatment system is functioning properly.
We recommend you get your well water tested before using it if:
β€’ Your water system loses all of its pressure.
β€’ No water comes out of the faucets.
β€’ Once operational, the appearance of the water causes you concern.
β€’ Until results confirm safety, boil water for at least one minute or use an alternative safe water source.
