Update: Blue-green algae and GRCA reservoirs

A second suspected blue-green algae bloom has been observed upstream of the Wellington Rd 26 bridge in the Belwood Lake reservoir.

Previous notices for suspected blue-green algae blooms at Belwood Lake, Guelph Lake and Shade’s Mills reservoirs remain in effect. Once a bloom has been observed, toxins may still be present in the water even when the bloom is no longer visible.

Blue-green algae can produce toxins that may cause serious illness in people and can be fatal to pets.

If you see blue-green algae in the water, which can look like spilled blue or green paint, thick pea soup or floating scum near shorelines, please:

• Keep children and pets away from the algae.
• Avoid contact with the algae.
• Don’t swim in areas where you see scum or where it is accumulating along the shoreline.
• Don’t eat fish from the lake.
• Don’t use the water for drinking or any other purpose.
• Boating is allowed where permitted, but avoid touching the algae.
