What is electrophysiology?

Electrophysiology involves specialized testing that measures the electrical activity of the visual system. These tests help us understand how well the retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye) and the visual pathways to the brain are functioning. This type of testing is crucial for diagnosing and managing a variety of eye and neurological conditions.

The IWK Visual Electrodiagnostic Clinic provides services for both adults and children across the Atlantic provinces. Patients are typically referred to us by ophthalmologists or neurologists.

Please visit our web page to learn more about the clinic.

The IWK Health Diabetes Clinic is participating in the Breakthrough T1D walk (Go Glucose Avengers!) taking place at Shubie Park on June 14th.

The TrialNet diabetes research team will be on hand to help screen those with a family member who has Type 1 to determine an increased risk of developing Diabetes.

Having a family member with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) may increase your risk of developing T1D. TrialNet offers a simple blood test that can identify increased risk for T1D years before symptoms appear.

Why get screened?
•Relatives of people with T1D are up to 15x more likely to develop T1D
•Screening can help detect T1D risk earlier
•Participants who test positive are monitored for early signs of T1D
•Some participants may qualify for studies exploring ways to delay or prevent T1D
•Help advance T1D prevention research for future families

Who can be screened?
TrialNet offers screening to family members of people with T1D:
•People between the ages of 2-45 years parent, sibling, or child with T1D
•People between the ages of 2-20 years who have a second-degree relative with T1D (cousin, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, or grandparent)

Screening Location & Time:

Location: Shubie Park, Fairbanks Interpretive Centre, 54 Locks Road, Dartmouth
Date & Time: 14 June 2026 from 9:30am-12:30pm

To get screened or for more information please contact:

Dr. Giacomo Vivanti has been named the Joan and Jack Craig Chair in Autism Research at Dalhousie University. His work focuses on helping bridge the gap between autism research and the real experiences of children and families by improving access to early, individualized, and family-centred supports.

Dr. Vivanti’s research explores how evidence-based practices can better connect with real-world systems and everyday environments, including preschools and community settings. His approach emphasizes early support, collaboration with families, and improving outcomes for
autistic children through research-informed care.

The appointment also reflects Nova Scotia’s growing leadership in autism research, innovation, and service transformation, including ongoing work across the Provincial Preschool Autism Service (PPAS).

Congratulations to Dr. Rosalind Woodworth on receiving the Clinical Staff Recognition Award which honours a clinical professional who makes a meaningful and positive impact on the work environment through outstanding contributions to patient care and everyday practice.

Dr. Woodworth joined the IWK Mental Health and Addictions program in 2014 after moving to Atlantic Canada from Australia.
