5 Signs Your Loved One May Need More Support at Home 🏡💚

Knowing when to ask for help can be difficult. Many families wait until there is a crisis, but early support can help seniors stay safe, confident, and independent at home.

Here are five signs it may be time to consider additional support:

1️⃣ Daily tasks are becoming harder
Things like cooking, cleaning, laundry, or personal care may start to feel overwhelming.

2️⃣ Changes in safety at home
Missed medications, increased falls, forgetfulness, or difficulty managing routines may be signs that extra support is needed.

3️⃣ Increased loneliness or isolation
Less social interaction can impact a senior’s overall well-being. Companionship can provide meaningful connection and engagement.

4️⃣ Family caregivers are feeling overwhelmed
Supporting a loved one is rewarding, but it can also become physically and emotionally exhausting without support.

5️⃣ A loved one is recovering from illness, injury, or hospitalization
Extra help during recovery can make the transition home smoother and help rebuild confidence.

Home care is not about taking away independence. It’s about providing the right support so seniors can continue living safely and comfortably in the place they love most: home. 💚

Like Teepa Snow often reminds us: when you meet one person with dementia, you have met just one person with dementia. 💚

Communication in dementia is affected by changes in processing, language, and understanding—not just memory. This is why everyday conversations can become confusing or frustrating.

Our caregivers are trained in Positive Approach to Care. This approach focuses on practical skills like adjusting tone, simplifying language, and using visual cues to support understanding in the moment. Caregivers often say it helps them slow down and connect more meaningfully.

For clients, this means clearer communication, less confusion, and more calm, successful interactions at home. 💚

The person providing care can make all the difference. 💚

When families choose home care, they’re not just looking for someone to help with daily routines. They’re looking for someone they can trust inside their loved one’s home.

A compassionate caregiver can provide:
✨ Encouragement and companionship
✨ Support with everyday activities
✨ A familiar face and consistent presence
✨ Peace of mind for families

Behind every great home care experience is a caregiver who takes the time to truly know the person they support.

We are grateful for the incredible caregivers who bring kindness, respect, and connection into our clients’ homes every day. 💚

In dementia care, behaviour is often communication when words are no longer accessible.

Changes in the brain can affect how a person processes their environment, meaning distress or agitation is often a response to unmet needs, not “behaviour” itself.

Through training in Positive Approach to Care, caregivers learn to pause, assess triggers, and respond in ways that reduce stress and increase safety. Caregivers often share that this helps them feel more confident and less reactive during care.

For clients, it leads to fewer escalations, more comfort, and a greater sense of calm at home. 💚

Nothing brings back summer memories quite like a stop at the Dairy Bar. ☀️🍦

For many people, favourite local spots become part of family traditions that are passed down through generations. We love seeing those traditions continue and creating new memories along the way.

What's your favourite summer spot in Nova Scotia?

Staying active doesn't have to mean going to a gym. 💚

The Fitness in the Kitchen program from Aging Well Nova Scotia shows how everyday household items like a countertop or a sturdy chair can be used to make exercise safe, simple, and accessible for older adults. It's a great reminder that small movements at home can help support strength, balance, and independence.

We're sharing pages 30 and 31 from the 2026–2027 Positive Aging Directory to help make staying active a little easier. View the full directory here:

Dementia does not take away a person’s need for dignity, respect, or choice.

Positive Approach to Care https://teepasnow.com teaches caregivers to focus on remaining abilities and support independence in daily routines. This includes slowing down, offering simple choices, and guiding rather than taking over care.

Caregivers often find this makes care feel more respectful and less task focused.

For clients, it means more involvement, less stress during care, and a stronger sense of dignity at home. 💚
