National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Yesterday, KB Counselling Therapy recognized Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Mental health and healing do not exist outside of history. The ongoing effects of colonialism, residential schools, forced displacement and systemic inequity continue to affect the well-being of Indigenous individuals, families and communities.
Counselling professionals have a responsibility to understand these realities and to recognize that trauma-informed care must also be culturally responsive, equity-informed and grounded in humility. This means listening to Indigenous voices, examining the assumptions built into our systems of care and continuing to learn how counselling spaces can become safer and more respectful.
We honour residential school Survivors, their families and communities, and remember the children who never returned home. Here in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq, we recognize that truth and reconciliation require ongoing learning, reflection and action.
We encourage our community to spend time with Indigenous-led resources from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and the Orange Shirt Society.
