In a matter of days, Shepherd went from a healthy two-year-old to fighting for his life.

After becoming critically ill, Shepherd was airlifted to BC Children's Hospital, where blood and platelet transfusions helped stabilize him. Soon after, his family received the devastating news: Shepherd had a high-risk form of B-cell leukemia.

For parents, there's no feeling more helpless.

But behind every treatment, every breakthrough and every reason for hope is decades of research and innovation.

Through financial contributions to Canadian Blood Services, donors help advance groundbreaking work in areas like transfusion medicine, genomics and CAR T-cell therapy, helping create better treatment options for patients facing blood cancers and other serious illnesses.

Today, Shepherd continues his fight against leukemia. And thanks to generous supporters, researchers and healthcare teams are working toward a future where families facing the same diagnosis have even more options, better outcomes and greater hope.

Your generosity helps power the breakthroughs patients are counting on ❤️

Just two months ago, Avery was your typical 15-year-old whose life revolved around video games, baseball, and friends. But one day, everything changed: he was diagnosed with leukemia.

"Your child has cancer” are words no parent or kid ever expects to hear. Shock, fear and uncertainty were filling their days. Yet Avery never stopped being strong and determined through it all.

Thanks to donors in Canada, Avery’s been able to receive blood and platelets transfusions, which are crucial in helping his body heal and keep fighting through treatment.

But there’s one more opportunity he needs to save his life. A stem cell transplant.

Finding Avery’s perfect stem cell match is a possibility his family is holding tightly onto. It means giving him back the life he loves, one where he can return to baseball practice, video games, and friends.

A teenage life that’s ordinary again ❤️

Avery and his family are deeply grateful to every donor who’s helped him fight cancer this far, and to everyone who’s brought them hope by taking two minutes to register as a stem cell donor 🫂

He’s not done fighting, and a stem cell match could save his life. Potentially becoming Avery’s lifesaver starts with just a couple of minutes of your time. Join our Stem Cell Registry at https://bit.ly/4zggicJ.

Canadian Blood Services joins Canadians across the country in extending our deepest sympathies to the Canadian Armed Forces, the community of Wainwright, Alberta, and everyone affected by the tragic fire. We are closely monitoring the needs of patients and hospitals in Alberta and will continue to work to ensure those needs are met.

We have been deeply moved by the countless people who reached out to ask how they can help. It’s a true testament to the generosity of Canadians and the importance of maintaining a strong, prepared blood system. “Your child has cancer” is every parent’s worst nightmare. But some choose to turn it into a moment of hope. For their kids. For themselves. And for families like theirs ❤️

This past September, in honour of Childhood Cancer Awareness month, parents of children affected by cancer came together to donate, honour their children and pass their strength and hope on to more families facing similar battles.

For them, getting to donate is deeply personal.

It’s about giving back and showing up for more cancer patients who need support, especially having witnessed how blood donations helped their own children stay strong and get through treatment.

Donors like them remind us that hope and strength lives in community, in sharing experiences of similar battles, in showing up together and reminding every family who’s still fighting that they’re never alone 🫂

“Donating blood for the first time at 26 was honestly one of the most meaningful and gratifying things I have ever done. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the things I’ve always said I wanted to do, but never actually took the step to do… and donating blood was one of them.

I didn’t have a personal tragedy or someone close to me needing blood that brought me there. I realized that I’m healthy, I’m able to give, and there is someone out there who may desperately need what I’m able to offer. It was such a simple act.

It reminded me that helping someone doesn’t always have to be a huge gesture. Sometimes giving a little bit of your time, simply because you can, can make an impact on someone’s life that you may never even get to see.

I really hope more young adults my age consider donating, even if they haven’t personally experienced a situation that has made blood donation feel close to home.

You don’t have to know the person whose life you may be helping to save for it to matter. I believe acts of service are one of the greatest gifts we can give in this life.

There is something really special about this experience, with absolutely nothing expected in return. I’m so grateful I became a donor. This will be a lifelong commitment for me moving forward.” – Madison, blood donor

Every single new Indigenous donor is an important milestone worth celebrating ❤️

Statistically, Indigenous patients who need a stem cell transplant face lower chances of finding a match, which is why building a donor base that reflects them is essential.

Following Truth and Reconciliation Day, students and Indigenous donors at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) came together for an Indigenous Donors Save Lives stem cell swabbing event.

They didn't only get to give. They filled this day with meaningful reflection and unique stories that'll live on forever.

Their participation resulted in a beautiful display of what can happen when Indigenous communities and allies work together towards a shared goal. In total, they recruited 144 new stem cell registrants, 62 of whom identify as Indigenous.

This is more than numbers. When we have more representation, we have more lives saved 🫂
