🤔A small shift in perspective can change how we support children.
Instead of asking:
❓ What’s wrong with this child?
What if we asked:
🧠 What state is their nervous system in?
What looks like aggression may be hyperarousal.
What looks like anxiety may be sensory overload.
What looks like refusal may be shutdown.
When we view behaviour through a nervous system lens, our response often changes too.
Instead of focusing only on behaviour, we might consider:
✨ sensory input
✨ movement
✨ rest
✨ co-regulation
✨ predictability
✨ lowering demands
✨ environmental supports
Because behaviour isn’t always a sign that a child won’t. Sometimes it’s a sign that a child can’t.
And sometimes it’s a sign that their nervous system needs support before they’re able to access the skills we know they have.
Before we ask what’s wrong with the child, let’s ask what state the nervous system might be in.
