How many of you have entered the postpartum realm feeling broken? Like your body has failed you?
“Failure to progress” and “stalled labour” are common terms you hear in hospital to describe a natural physiological function your body has when your subconscious has deemed it to unsafe to birth.
Bright lights, constant interruption, fast paced environment, and projected fears are all things you will face when you enter hospital doors.
The energy in a hospital goes against every single physiological function that we, as mammals, need in order to comfortably and safely birth our babies.
In nature, mammals often go off to birth in quiet, or in some cases will surround themselves with those most trusted. They birth in the environment that makes them feel the safest and do not allow strangers into their space. When danger looms, depending on how near their baby is, they will either eject their fetus quickly or labour will stop completely until they’re able to find a safer place to have their baby.
We often forgot that we are mammals and birth is a physiological function.
A hospital, a place that’s meant to heal the sick and mend the wounded does not scream “safe space” to me… and you, my dear, are not sick or wounded. Your body and your baby are working just how they’re meant to.
So if you are a mom who’s feeling like your body let you down, and that you couldn’t have birthed your baby on your own. Perhaps it’s time to reflect and ask yourself some important questions:
❓Were you given the space and comfort needed to allow your natural hormones to release?
❓Were the lights dim and the room quiet?
❓Did you feel safe and held the entire time you were labouring your baby down?
If you have to think twice about any of those questions than maybe it’s possible your body did not “fail to progress” at all, that maybe your body was working just how it’s meant to.
