Gestalt Language Processing isn't about memorizing scripts: it's a natural pathway toward increasingly flexible, natural, self-generated communication. 🧩⛰️

Each stage serves an important purpose, from meaningful whole-language gestalts to self-generated sentences with grammar.

When we understand how language develops, we can better support our children without rushing or trying to skip stages.

Some children will progress through the stages quickly while others may get stuck in a certain stage and need more support.

🧩 Every script has meaning.

⛰️ Every stage deserves attention.

💙 Communication is the goal; not perfection.

Which stage was new to you? Reach out to us if you feel your child needs support moving through the GLP stages. You can book a free phone call with Owner/Clinical Director, Melissa Mascio www.mountain-speech.ca

Have you ever heard a child repeat lines from a movie, TV show, or something you said earlier? 📺

For many gestalt language processors, these repeated phrases are called gestalts. They are meaningful chunks of language that help children communicate before they develop flexible, self-generated speech.

Many GLPs also use echolalia, which can be immediate (repeating something right away) or delayed (using a phrase heard much earlier). Although these phrases may seem unrelated to the situation, they often carry important meaning for the child. 🏔️

Instead of asking, "Why are they repeating that?" we can ask, "What are they trying to communicate?" Echolalia communicates!

By looking beyond the words, we can better understand and support a child's unique communication journey. 💙

We’ve all heard the myth: "If they use a device, they’ll stop trying to talk." 🗣️❌

Oh hell nah! 🙅‍♀️ The research is clear and has been for decades. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) does NOT replace speech. In fact, it often gives individuals the confidence and tools they need to support their verbal communication! 🏔️✨

At Mountain Speech, we believe every voice deserves to be heard, whether it’s through a device, signs, pictures, or spoken words. AAC isn’t a "last resort": it’s a powerful bridge to connection. 💙

Let’s keep debunking this myth!🏔️🙌

Summer GLP Series ☀️ | Part 1 of 6

Did you know children don't all learn language the same way?

Some children build language one word at a time (analytic language processors), while others learn in meaningful chunks or "gestalts" before developing flexible, self-generated speech (gestalt language processors).

A common myth is that **all autistic children are GLPs, or that all GLPs are autistic.** In reality, GLP is a **language processing style: not a diagnosis.** While many autistic children are gestalt language processors, not every autistic child is, and not every GLP is autistic.

Understanding *how* a child learns language helps us provide support that honors their unique communication journey.

A teenager receives a snack every five minutes for having a "calm body and voice." But we need to ask: Are we supporting genuine regulation: or simply training someone to look calm?

A quiet voice, still hands, eye contact, or reduced movement do not necessarily mean a person feels safe or regulated. They may be complying, masking, overwhelmed, or afraid of losing the reward.

Support should prioritize:
✨ Communication & Consent
✨ Sensory Needs
✨ Self-Advocacy & Coping Strategies
✨ Age-Respectful Dignity

The goal should not be to create a teenager who looks easier for adults to manage. The goal is helping them understand, communicate, and meet their own needs. 💙

Who knew that working on "ar" sounds could be this much fun? 🎨💬

At Mountain Speech Language Services, we believe that the best learning happens when we lean into creativity and play. This week, Ms. Brittannie took a hands-on (or rather, arms-on!) approach to articulation therapy.

By turning therapy into a canvas, we explored the "ar" sound in a way that is:

✨ Engaging: Using markers to create vibrant "art" right on Ms. Brittannie’s "arm."
✨ Multimodal: Connecting the sound to a physical action and a visual result.
✨ Affirming: Creating a safe, playful space where finding one’s voice feels like an adventure.

Whether we are working on speech sounds, literacy, or social communication, our goal is always to make the journey feel supportive and genuine. Every stride forward is worth celebrating, especially when it involves a little bit of sparkle and a lot of smiles! 🏔️✨

Do you have a favorite creative way to practice speech sounds at home? We’d love to hear about your own adventures in communication below!

Sometimes the best therapy sessions don't happen at a desk: they happen on an arm! 🎨

We love finding creative ways to make speech and language practice feel like an adventure. Recently, Ms. Brittannie and her student took their articulation work to a whole new level!

By turning "ar" practice into literal "art" on her "arm," they created a multisensory experience that makes learning stick. 💬✨

Why we love this playful approach:
🔹 It builds a genuine connection between therapist and student.
🔹 It turns repetition into a fun, creative challenge.
🔹 It provides a safe space to explore sounds and find one’s voice.

At Mountain Speech Language Services, we believe that every stride in communication is worth celebrating: even the ones that involve a little washable marker! 🏔️✨

July 22nd is Fragile X Syndrome Awareness Day. 🏔️💙

Fragile X is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability. While it presents unique navigation points, it also brings incredible strengths!

Individuals with Fragile X often have a wonderful sense of humor, a deep desire for social connection, and remarkable gifts in visual memory and imitation. They are often described as having "heart," showing great empathy and kindness toward others. 🌟

Supporting individuals with Fragile X means a neurodiversity-affirming approach: one that respects sensory needs, builds on natural imitation skills, and provides tools like AAC to help their voices shine.

Awareness is the first step toward a more inclusive community. By understanding the unique ways people with Fragile X interact with the world, we can celebrate the heights they reach every day.
