DQ Miracle Treat Day is almost here! 🍦💙

As we enter another heat wave, remember to take precaution to prevent heat related illnesses, like heat exhaustion and heat stroke.🥵

Here are a few tips:
✔️ Limit physical activity outdoors, especially during peak temperatures.
✔️ When outdoors drink lots of water, wear a hat and loose fitting clothes.
✔️ Close blinds/curtains and use fans to circulate cooler air.
✔️ Avoid turning on the stove. Cook outside or eat cool meals.
✔️ Spend some time indoors in air conditioning to cool down. If your home isn't air conditioned there are many "cool places" across Hamilton where you can go, such as libraries and community centres.

If you or your kids experience symptoms of heat related illness such as dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, fainting, nausea and/or vomiting, visit your family doctor or our Urgent Care Centre.

As an embedded (hospital-based) scientist with our Extensive Needs Service program, Dr. Jordan Edwards is tasked with discovering ways to make system-wide improvements to program delivery.

This program supports children and youth with complex health and behavioural needs, along with their families. It’s led by our hospital, CHEO, and Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, and works closely with community partners.

When this program launched three years ago, it included a role for research and evaluation in order to constantly monitor its effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. Having an embedded scientist on the team helps program leaders better understand the families they’re supporting, identify service gaps, and improve the system so it’s more equitable. Here’s a story from our Extensive Needs Service program partners in Waterloo - glad to partner with providers across the region to deliver care to kids close to home.

Meet Everly: Sunbeam’s Extensive Needs Services (ENS) program has supported Everly and her family, with access to Brightside ABA, Speech-Language Pathology and Occupational Therapy at Sunbeam. FASD Coordination and Sunbeam’s Children’s Psychiatry Clinic have also been involved, ensuring wrap-around services and supports.

The ENS program has allowed Everly to access services in an interdisciplinary way which has had a huge impact on Everly and her family. Regular meetings ensure that all resources and disciplines stay aligned with goals and progress, creating consistency and continuity across all service areas. This collaborative service hub approach has reduced stress on Everly’s parent, who shared:

“We now have access to a specialized team of professionals at Sunbeam that shares information, supports one another, and makes sure nothing gets missed. Every single person we have worked with has been absolutely amazing! You can really see and feel how much everyone cares about Everly and how they have all gone above and beyond for her.”

Everly is truly special. Her humour, bravery, caring and kind-hearted nature, her inquisitiveness, her spirited energy and her remarkable sense of discernment make her who she is. Each of these qualities shines through in everything she does, making her such a unique and wonderful person.

Now that long weekends and summer vacations are upon us, it's important to know your health-care options, especially if your family doctor's office will be closed.

🩺The Hamilton Health Sciences Urgent Care Centre is located down the road from us and is open every day, even on holidays, from 10am to 9pm. It's a great option if you or your kids have a medical issue that requires attention, but is not an emergency. This includes (but is not limited to):

✔️Sprains/strains
✔️Minor cuts/wounds that require stitches
✔️Simple broken bones
✔️Ear infections
✔️Insect bites
✔️Fever/cough/congestion/sore throat
✔️Rashes

When a child arrives in an emergency department, every second counts — no matter which hospital they visit.

That's why we recently welcomed health-care providers from 14 hospital systems across southwestern Ontario for the first-ever PEARLS Day.

Through realistic simulations and hands-on training, participants practiced managing some of the most serious pediatric emergencies while learning from experts and one another.

The new PEARLS Network is helping hospitals across the region build stronger pediatric emergency care through collaboration, shared expertise and ongoing learning so children can receive high-quality care closer to home whenever possible.
